Reverse Osmosis in Guatemala: Local Q1,868 vs Imported

We put a seven-stage reverse osmosis system with a UV lamp under the kitchen sink on 29 August 2026. Here is what it cost, what the local alternative costs, and where most readers should spend differently.

The house is a five-person, four-bathroom house in Antigua, drinking from a cistern fed by a municipal line — the normal arrangement here (Antigua water and utilities, water outages). This page does not re-argue whether Guatemalan tap water is safe; that has its own page, is Guatemala’s water safe. This is the sequel, and one stage of setting up a house in Guatemala.

Quick summary: the local answer is a Q1,473 five-stage RO plus a Q395 alkaline cartridge — Q1,868, in stock, cartridges from a counter you can drive to. We paid more, for an imported iSpring RCC7AK-UVBN at $280.48, because our spec changed to require NSF/ANSI-58 certification, built-in remineralisation and UV. Local won this comparison on price, twice; it only lost when the spec moved.

Every price here is a dated reading, not a current price; vendor prices moved inside four weeks while we shopped. Dollars convert at Q7.6237/USD, the rate used on 20 August 2026 (today’s rate).

Why RO comes after the softener, and why ours didn’t

A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium. It stops scale, and it does not lower total dissolved solids at all. Reverse osmosis does. Conflating the two is the most common mistake we saw while shopping. Hardness is also what scales an RO membrane, so removing it upstream is the biggest thing you can do for membrane cost: softener first, RO second.

We did the opposite, deliberately. The RO went in on 29 August 2026 with the softener still unbought, because drinking water was the urgent half and the membrane is a replaceable consumable. The price of that shortcut, before you copy it: the manufacturer’s own schedule puts stages 1 to 3 at 6 months, sooner on very hard water until the softener is in, and membrane rejection wants watching monthly.

What the strips said

We ran the Varify 17-in-1 kit (100 strips plus 2 bacteria tests , $24.27 on 20 August 2026) on the house tap on 29 August 2026: hardness 250 to 425 ppm, iron approximately 0, pH approximately 6.5 to 7, chlorine trace to low, nitrate, nitrite and heavy metals at or near zero.

This is a strip read, not a lab panel. Hardness is the entire problem here; we are not fighting iron, nitrate or a heavy-metal load. The kit includes two bacteria tests and we have not run one, so nothing here tells you anything about coliforms in our cistern. We never recorded a before-and-after TDS reading either, so there is no reduction percentage from this house to quote — the 90%-plus figure below is the manufacturer’s acceptance criterion, not a measurement.

The local option, priced in full

Two traps in that table. Order by SKU, not by name: the 5-stage’s product name says PUMP 1GPM while its own spec sheet says maquina RO sin bomba. It ships without a booster pump — correct behind a constant-pressure pump, and it will not run on a gravity tinaco. And no faucet is included: the vendor’s lead-free option is price-on-request and was never quoted to us, so we have no number for it. Whatever you fit must be lead-free.

Same dates, elsewhere: Cemaco listed a Filterpro RO at Q1,499 on 6 August 2026 without disclosing its stage contents. On the full first page of Facebook Marketplace Guatemala on 20 August 2026 the only credible listing was a new Express Water 5-stage at Q1,900 in Amatitlán — no remineralisation, so Q2,295 mixed-brand once you add the cartridge; a Frizzlife tankless pH+ was Q4,242. No iSpring- or APEC-class remineralising system exists second-hand here.

What we bought, and what it cost to land

Order placed 20 August 2026, shipped to a Miami forwarder.

The tax line is not an error: the forwarder’s Miami address is a Florida export-exempt location, so no US sales tax is charged. The RO price was a limited-time 15% deal against a $329.99 typical price.

The landed cost is an estimate and has to be labelled one. Our ledger records about $171.80 through Aeropost — roughly $112 of freight and fees at about 31 lb, plus about $59.80 of DAI and IVA at the 17% filtro de agua class — for about $476.55 landed, roughly Q3,633, from two same-day runs of the courier’s own calculator. No final invoice is on disk. An earlier, rougher estimate said about Q3,380, scaled from a 28-lb run; Q3,633 supersedes it. When the invoice lands, this page gets actual against predicted.

Why we paid more, after ruling twice that we shouldn’t

On 5 August 2026 we priced the APEC ROES-50 at $219 and the plain iSpring RCC7AK at $199, added roughly 25 to 30 lb of freight and IVA, and got about Q2,700 to Q3,200 landed against Q1,473 local, with local cartridge supply. Import loses — and that ruling corrected an earlier note of ours claiming Amazon won.

What flipped it on 20 August 2026 was not a better price but a changed requirement: from an RO system to an NSF/ANSI-58 certified RO with remineralisation and UV, for a cistern-fed house. Three channels, same day:

The clear-housing variant was skipped as $75 for aesthetics. The no-UV row is the cleanest measured example of the light-item flip: at roughly 30 lb the per-pound courier beat the local mirror, Q2,926 against Q3,239. Above 100 lb the opposite holds. And on 23 August 2026 Amazon beat ispringfilter.com three for three — this RO at $280.48 against $356.99, WSP-50 $50.99 against $69.99, WSP50ARB $205.79 against $229.99.

Why the UV stage is defensible here. An RO membrane is not a certified sterilizer, and the storage tank can regrow biofilm between draws. The 11 W lamp sits at the dispense point, after the tank, with a flow sensor that lights it only while water moves — the cistern risk, addressed in the right place. On a pressurised municipal line to the tap the case is much weaker. It needs a 110 V outlet under the sink; the lamp is UVB11, the ballast UVT11A. None of this makes water sterile or potable-certified, and the listing’s NSF/ANSI-58 certification covers the RO system, not a bacteria claim.

The granite, the faucet, and the Q139.98 answer

An under-sink RO needs its own faucet, and our counter is granite.

Drilling won, on 29 August 2026. The manual’s tolerance is generous — 1/2 inch optimal, anything up to about 1-1/2 inches works, because the base plate covers the hole — which matters, because Cemaco’s smallest diamond cup is 7/8 inch. Both parts in stock that day:

Separate SKUs; you need both. Cemaco free shipping starts at Q250, so below that it is store pickup.

The method, from the manual: masking tape over the mark, a ring of plumber’s putty about 10 cm across as a dam, filled with water; bit into the arbor, arbor into the drill, never the impact driver, hammer mode off, always, on stone; slowest speed, light pressure, start tilted 10 to 15 degrees, then vertical. The manual budgets 20 to 40 minutes per inch. Choose the spot from the underside: flat granite, no support rail, at least 5 cm from the sink cutout. Not drilling? The kit includes a cabinet-sidewall bracket.

The tri-flow faucet, priced and retired. A three-way faucet mounts in the existing hole, no drilling, and needs a dedicated lead-free RO waterway. On 29 August 2026 we checked Cemaco, Aquasistemas, EWS, Novex and EPA: Guatemalan retail has zero tri-flow faucets — an import-only category, which is itself a finding. That day: Paragon Sarpsborg $289.90 (it had been $199.90 on 6 August, a promo that may cycle; list $389.90), Moen Align 3-in-1 $716.76; landed estimate Q1,700 to Q1,900. Avoid Pfister Xtract and Grohe Blue Pure: proprietary two-in-ones that cannot accept an external RO.

The install, in the order it happens

Seven positions, in order: feed adapter on the cold angle stop (confirm which one is actually cold), faucet hole, drain saddle, filter bank on the cabinet wall, tank on the floor, UV ballast into an outlet, and — phase two — a tee into the fridge line cut after the UV. Tube colours are the manufacturer’s: red feed, black drain, yellow tank, blue faucet.

The drain saddle is the one to get right: vertical tailpiece, above the trap, mounted low. Never after the trap — sewer gas reaches the membrane. Never on the disposal’s pipe — food sludge crusts the 1/4 inch port. Pick the spot once; a moved saddle leaves an open hole. Two that bite later: mount the bank high enough that the housings unscrew downward, and precharge the tank at 7 to 10 psi empty.

The physics the sales counter will not volunteer: there is no pump in this model. House pressure alone pushes water through the membrane, feed spec 45 to 70 psi, production roughly 2 to 3 gallons per hour. The 3.2-gallon tank is what makes the faucet feel fast, refilling in 1.5 to 2.5 hours at spec pressure; the system stops itself at about two-thirds of feed pressure. Reject water dripping while producing is normal — if it never stops after four hours, feed pressure is under 45 psi.

At startup, flush stages 1 to 3 into a bucket until the water runs clear, then discard the entire first tank. Re-check every fitting at 24 hours.

Replacement filters, with the SKUs

All verified live on Amazon on 29 August 2026, all fitting the RCC7AK-UVBN.

For gap years, à la carte the same day: FT15-N post-carbon $20.99, a generic MC7-compatible membrane $18.99, the F3 prefilter trio $15.69. The 2-year kit has sat at $190.94 flat since 17 January 2026.

Manufacturer’s cadence: stages 1 to 3 every 6 months (sooner on hard water), post-carbon at 12 months, alkaline at 6, the membrane at 2 to 3 years with monthly TDS checks and early replacement under 90% rejection, the UV bulb yearly. Our first change is due around March 2027.

What decides this in Guatemala: stages 1 to 3 are standard 10 by 2.5 inch cartridges, so local ones fit between kit years — the Q23 sediment cartridge above is the same size. An imported system on proprietary consumables would be a trap here. This one is not.

On annual upkeep we decline to give one round quetzal number. Two figures sit in our records on different bases — one a whole-system estimate, the other staged kit changes only — and averaging two bases is how a made-up number gets published. Who should just buy local

Most people reading this, honestly.

• Buy the Q1,868 local pair if you do not specifically need NSF/ANSI-58 certification, built-in remineralisation or UV. In stock, local warranty, cartridges nearby. Budget a lead-free faucet on top.
• On a gravity tinaco, neither unit will run — about 29 psi required, no pump included. Fix pressure first.
• Import only when the specification is the reason. Ours was, and it would have landed at roughly twice the local pair, on the estimate, after freight and duty.
• Put the softener in first if the budget allows both. We did not, so the manufacturer’s hard-water note — stages 1 to 3 sooner than the standard 6 months — applies to us until the softener is in. We have not measured a penalty of our own.
