Hot water is the one house system in Guatemala where the cheapest answer is sold in every hardware store and the most expensive one can quietly change your electricity tariff. We priced every type on sale in two Guatemalan catalogs on 2 October 2026, and we bring one thing from our own house in Antigua that no catalog will tell you: what happened when a tankless heater met EEGSA’s 11 kW line.
The three-line version. (1) For one or two showers, an electric shower head at Q99.99-799.99 is the cheap answer. (2) For the whole house, a tank heater draws far less power at once than a tankless one: the Rheem 40-gallon is rated 3,700 W, a whole-house tankless 11.8-12 kW. (3) On a net-metered solar house, that difference is what decides whether EEGSA sends you a tariff letter.
Every price below is a dated catalog reading from cemaco.com and aquasistemas.com.gt on 2 October 2026, not a quote. Conversions and landed costs: exchange rates and the import calculator.

Gas and solar
Gas tankless, all LP: Foset 6 L/min Q937.99 (lights on D-cell batteries, switches off after 20 minutes, 2-year warranty), Foset 11 L/min Q1,715, Foset 13 L/min Q2,020, Rheem 8 L Q3,099, Rheem 13 L/min Q3,999 (1-year warranty), Rheem 16 L/min Q6,229 at Cemaco; Aquathermax 6 L Q1,234 and Capricornus units at Q1,695 and Q2,470 at Aquasistemas. Gas tank heaters were rarer: two American units at Aquasistemas, 30 gallons Q5,337 and 40 gallons Q5,792.
Solar: Cemaco listed a 10-tube unit at Q3,229 with no spec table, and a Sun Max 300-litre pressurised evacuated-tube unit at Q7,999, sold online only, which its listing sizes for up to 5-6 people. Aquasistemas listed Aquathermax solar units at Q9,403 (160 L) and Q14,949 (300 L).
The 11 kW line: why our house went back to a tank
This is the part we lived. Our house in Antigua runs a 9.92 kW solar system on EEGSA’s net-metering tariff. In June and July 2026 EEGSA sent two letters saying the meter had recorded a maximum demand of 13.34 kW and then 15.07 kW, and that users above 11 kW belong on the BTDA demand tariff, which adds peak-power and contracted-power charges. The main cause in our case was a battery set by mistake to charge from the grid. The second change we made was to replace the tankless water heater with a tank heater.
The arithmetic is plain once you see the ratings side by side. Every whole-house electric tankless unit in the table above is rated 11 to 12 kW (the DCE 10 listing also gives 9,000-10,700 W at 208 V). At full power that is the 11 kW line on its own, before the fridge, the pump or anybody’s hair dryer. The Rheem R40 tank heats its water at 3,700 W, under a third of that, over a longer time, so it never shows up on the meter as one 12 kW spike.
If you are on a plain residential tariff without solar, check your own bill and your distributor’s rules before assuming the same threshold applies; what we have in writing is EEGSA’s letter to a net-metered account. The full story, both letters and the fix are in the 11 kW section of our solar guide, and the tariff tables are on our electricity page.
Electric shower heads: the cheap answer, with a caveat
At Q99.99 for a four-temperature Kibanho head sold without a hose, the cheapest electric shower head costs about a ninth of the cheapest central heater we found (a Q937.99 gas unit). Cemaco’s 127 V heads ran up to Q799.99, and a 110 V Stiebel Eltron unit rated 5.6 kW was Q1,929. The 127 V ones with a published rating draw 4,800 to 5,400 W at 127 V while the water runs, so have an electrician check the circuit before you hang one; our electrician price page covers what that labour costs. They heat one shower and nothing else: no hot water at the kitchen sink, none for the washing machine.
Installation, and what the fixed price excludes
Cemaco publishes fixed installation prices on its own catalog:
| Service (Cemaco, 2 Oct 2026) | Price | Includes | Excludes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric tankless install | Q600 | Labour, materials, 2x60 A breaker, function test, 30-day warranty | Wiring (needs 220 V at the spot), plumbing, masonry |
| Electric tank install | Q750 | Same | Same |
| Gas heater install | Q750 | Same plus a timer | Same |
| Replace an existing unit | Q450-550 | — | — |
The exclusion is the part that costs money. If the spot has no 220 V supply, the electrician comes first. For independent plumbers’ rates on heater work, see our plumber price page.
Import or buy here?
On duty, importing starts behind. The Central American tariff on SIECA, read on 2 October 2026, puts 15% duty on electric instantaneous and storage water heaters (heading 8516.10) and 15% on gas instantaneous heaters (8419.11), against 10% on solar water heaters (8419.12). 12% IVA then applies on the value plus freight plus duty. A 40-gallon tank also weighs 43 kg on Rheem’s own Guatemalan listing, which is a courier bill before it is a duty bill. The brands an importer would reach for, Rheem, Stiebel Eltron, American, are already on Guatemalan shelves at the prices above. Our import channels page has the courier arithmetic if a specific model is not stocked.
How we would choose
- One bathroom, tight budget: an electric shower head on its own circuit.
- Whole house, on solar or near the 11 kW line: an electric tank heater. The 40-gallon Rheem at Q3,849 is the listing that states the most (power, voltage, points of use, weight, warranty).
- Whole house, propane already in the kitchen: an LP tankless unit sized by litres per minute, plus the Q750 install.
- Whole house, roof space and sun: solar. Ask the seller what heats the water on a cloudy week; the Sun Max spec table we read does not say.
Part of our setting up a house in Guatemala cluster: cistern, tinaco and pressure tank · sediment filters · importing a solar battery · water pressure pump.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a water heater cost in Guatemala?
On Cemaco’s catalog on 2 October 2026: 127 V electric shower heads from Q99.99 to Q799.99, whole-house electric tankless units from Q2,294 (11.8 kW) to Q4,280 (12 kW), Rheem electric tanks from Q2,919 (15 gallons) to Q6,239 (80 gallons), LP gas tankless units from Q937.99 (6 L/min) to Q6,229 (16 L/min), and solar units from Q3,229 to Q7,999. Aquasistemas listed the same categories in a similar band, with solar up to Q14,949 for 300 litres. These are dated catalog readings, not quotes.
Can a tankless electric water heater cause problems with EEGSA?
It can push your peak demand up. The whole-house electric tankless units on sale on 2 October 2026 were rated 11 to 12 kW. EEGSA’s letter to our net-metered solar account said that users whose maximum demand goes above 11 kW belong on the BTDA demand tariff, which adds peak and contracted power charges. At full power, one of these heaters alone sits at or above that line; add an oven or a dryer and you are well past it. Our house replaced its tankless heater with a tank heater after two of those letters.
What does installation cost?
Cemaco published fixed installation prices on 2 October 2026: Q600 for an electric tankless heater, Q750 for an electric tank heater and Q750 for a gas heater. Each includes labour, materials and a 2x60 amp breaker, with a 30-day warranty on the installation, and excludes new wiring: you need a 220 V supply already at the spot. Replacing an existing unit was listed at Q450 to Q550.
Is it worth importing a water heater from the US?
On duty alone it starts behind. In the Central American tariff we read on SIECA on 2 October 2026, electric water heaters carry 15% import duty and gas instantaneous heaters 15%, against 10% for solar water heaters; 12% IVA applies on top of the value plus freight plus duty. Rheem tanks, Stiebel Eltron tankless units and American-brand tank heaters are already on Guatemalan shelves, so the import case is weak unless the exact model you need is not stocked.
Electric shower head or a central water heater?
An electric shower head (ducha eléctrica) heats only that shower, costs Q99.99 to Q799.99 for the 127 V models at Cemaco, and the 127 V ones with a published rating draw 4,800 to 5,400 W while running. A central heater feeds every tap but costs Q2,294 and up plus Q600-750 to install. If you only need hot water in one or two showers, the shower head is the cheap answer; if you want hot water at the kitchen sink and the washing machine too, you need a central unit.
