Import to Guatemala or Buy Local? 4 Channels, Real Quotes

In one month, in one house in Antigua, the cheapest way to get something into Guatemala changed three times. Not because rates moved. Because the boxes did.

This is the arithmetic behind that, on our own shipments and quotes: a 130-lb machine priced across four channels in one day, a 31-lb box that flipped the answer, a 26-lb pump in a different duty class, and a consumables order that should never have touched a courier.

Quick summary

• One machine, one day, four channels (2026-08-20): Guatemala Digital’s Amazon mirror Q9,039 · Aeropost Q10,647 · Quick Box USA Q11,842 · a flat-rate box courier that could not physically take it.
• The two couriers disagreed on its duty class the same day — 5% DAI at one, 15% at the other.
• The answer flips around 30 lb. On a filtration system in that range the per-pound courier won: Q2,926 vs Q3,239.
• Consumables should touch neither. Temu ships free, in a published window of 17 to 43 days.
• No remembered numbers. Every figure came from a courier’s calculator, a retailer’s checkout, or our order ledger, with its read date.

On the prices: dated readings, not current prices, converted at Q7.6237/USD (the rate our source material used on 2026-08-20 — check the current exchange rate). And the hard caveat: none of the 2026 landed costs below were paid. They are quotes and calculator estimates.

One machine, four channels, one day

The item is a 130-lb water softener, declared value $769, made in USA. The spec card any calculator actually needs, because box shape mattered more than price:

• Box 1 — loaded resin tank, roughly 12 x 12 x 57 in, 95-105 lb. Dimensional weight computes to 49, so actual weight governs.
• Box 2 — brine tank and valve, roughly 16 x 16 x 36 in, 25-32 lb. Dimensional weight computes to 56, so dimensional governs wherever a courier applies it.
• Totals: ~130 lb actual, ~155-161 lb chargeable where volumetric weight applies. Always ask whether peso volumétrico applies — it moves the quote by roughly 25%.
• A 105-lb, 57-inch box needs a street-address casillero. Ground carriers will not deliver it to a literal PO box.

Two things there beat the prices. The flat-rate courier was disqualified by dimensions, not price: their box is 30 x 30 x 30 inches, the resin tank box is 57 inches long. At $325 it was the cheapest number on the page and never actually available. Check the box before the rate.

And the two couriers are not quoting the same billed weight — 137 lb at one, 130 lb at the other. That is normal, and it is why no single rate card can answer this for you.

One line in the Quick Box quote is worth reading against their rate card. Their flete of Q3,819.82 over 130 lb is about $3.85/lb — our arithmetic on their figures — against the $3.30/lb Standard rate published on their own site, which is about $3.70/lb once the 12% IVA the rate card explicitly excludes is added back. That closes most of the gap but not all of it, and the cotizador bills gestión and admin on their own lines without breaking the flete line down further, so we cannot say what the remainder covers.

Neither courier had a category for a water softener

Aeropost’s category list has no entry for a water softener. Filtro de agua and purificador are both 17% classes; bomba de agua and calentador de agua are 12% classes but are not this product. The machine ran under filtro de agua; reclassifying it would only have saved the 5% DAI, about $46. Quick Box USA’s list runs to 237 classes and contains no water or filtration class at all, so the same machine was quoted as electrodomésticos at 15% DAI.

Same day, same $769 item: one quote carried DAI at 5%, the other DAI at 15% — $45.60 of duty on one, Q1,061.23 on the other. You cannot appeal that after the box lands. Ask which class your item will be declared under before you ship.

These are the classes we have actually seen assigned or quoted — not a tariff table, a log of what specific channels did on specific dates.

The general shape is DAI of 0-20% on CIF — cost, insurance and freight, not just the item price — and then 12% IVA on CIF plus the DAI. The tax sits on top of the duty, so the all-in bite is 12.0% of CIF at 0% DAI, 17.6% at 5%, 28.8% at 15% and 34.4% at 20%. Our import calculator implements CIF + DAI as the IVA base; run your own item. And note what the table does not say: it does not say pumps are 0% DAI as a rule. It says one courier’s bomba de agua class was a 12% class. Classification is the courier’s call.

The 31-lb box flipped the answer

Same vendor, same day, one reverse-osmosis filtration system — 25 to 30 lb at quote time, about 31 lb as shipped. Aeropost quoted Q2,926. The Guatemala Digital mirror wanted Q3,239.

Against the 130-lb case above, where the mirror won by Q1,608, that is the crossover:

Light, up to about 30 lb: the per-pound courier wins. Heavy, 100 lb and up: the flat mirror crushes per-pound freight. Always run both.

The mechanism: Guatemala Digital’s markup on the softener was 54% — Q3,176 on a $769 machine — and the cheapest air courier wanted Q1,608 more than that to move 130 lb. On heavy freight their flat price is not a markup to beat, it is the market-fair full-service price. On a 30-lb box the same percentage is smaller than the courier’s freight bill, and the courier wins.

The markup is checkable, not guessable: their product pages expose the source listing in a CodigoAmazon field, so any listing maps back to the exact Amazon listing it mirrors. One identical machine, 2026-08-20, four prices on one vendor’s site:

The same machine, on one site, at four prices spanning Q3,480. Searching their catalogue by ASIN rather than by product name is what surfaces the cheap one, and on-demand mirrors reprice at request time, so re-pull before deciding. Published terms as of 2026-08-20: 30 days to report defects, with repair, replacement or refund at their diagnosis; 30-day return unused and in-box; after that, the manufacturer.

The weight-to-price rule, and why cheap-and-light is the trap

Put our four shipments side by side and the pattern is not about couriers at all. The overhead percentages below are our own arithmetic on the documented figures — not a published rate from anyone. The inputs are visible so you can redo them.

Read the last two columns together: as dollars-of-goods-per-pound falls, overhead climbs from a third of the purchase price to over four-fifths. Two dials drive it:

1. Weight-to-value. Freight is charged on pounds; duty and IVA on value. Cheap heavy goods pay freight on weight they cannot amortise.
2. Duty class. Both 0%-DAI shipments sit at the bottom of the range; both 17%-class shipments at the top. A duty class is worth more than a courier choice.

Expensive and light is the best value a courier will ever give you. Cheap and heavy is the worst. And cheap and light is worse than it looks — the fixed per-package block is charged whatever is in the box, so a $20 item at one pound can pay a large share of its own value in overhead before a cent of duty.

Hence the Temu channel below: you do not fix a cheap-and-light problem with a better per-pound rate. You fix it by not using a per-package courier.

The fees you cannot see on the rate card

The per-pound casillero model is a formula, and three of its four parts never appear on the homepage.

duties   = DAI 0-20% of CIF (by category), then 12% IVA on CIF + DAI

The per-pound rate is tiered, not flat. The rate card on our own courier directory — scraped from Aeropost’s published rates and last verified in April 2026, so older than everything else on this page — shows $4.50/lb (0-0.9 lb), $3.70/lb (1-35 lb), $2.99/lb (35 lb and up). Quoting the 35-lb-and-up rate on a 3-lb box understates freight by about 24%. It bit us: on the pump, the courier’s own estimate used $4.50/lb against the $2.99/lb base rate we had banked, most likely because dimensional weight applied (order ledger, 2026-08-31).

The fixed block is per package, not per order. Those three fixed lines are the ones our own Aeropost quote of 20 August 2026 actually carried — $1.99 + $2.23 + $4.00 = $8.22 — and they are levied per package. On a five-item order arriving as three separate packages that is charged three times: $24.66 before a pound of freight or a cent of duty. It kills mixed baskets: consolidating beats negotiating.

File the pre-alert. Not filing one added a small surcharge, about $2, on the softener quote.

Quick Box USA’s live rate is $3.30/lb plus IVA on the Standard plan, or 33 lb prepaid for $99 plus IVA on Premium, which works out to $3.00/lb — read on their own Guatemalan plans page on 3 September 2026, and unchanged from the $3.30/lb Standard rate we verified on 2026-08-20. Our Quick Box pages were re-read against the live rate card on 3 September 2026; older copies of this site quoted a $2.25/lb plan that is no longer on the card.

The Miami forwarder’s tax exemption is worth 6-7% on its own

The forwarder’s Miami warehouse is a verified Florida export-exempt location, so major US retailers charge no US sales tax on orders shipped there. An ordinary US residential address instead adds roughly 7%.

We measured it rather than assuming it. On 2026-08-30 the identical marketplace order previewed at $396.37 to the Miami forwarder against $424.24 to a US residential address: a $27.87 gap, of which $22.80 was sales tax. Price that exemption into every comparison — it silently reverses close calls, and it is the line most often forgotten.

Temu direct: free shipping, 17 to 43 days, and a countdown that is theatre

• Direct to Guatemala, free standard shipping on every order, no minimum. A Guatemalan courier handles the last mile.
• The real window is 17 to 43 days, published on their own Guatemalan shipping-information page: “Envio estandar - GRATIS en todos los pedidos - De 17 a 43 dias.” The cart badge reading “En GT en al menos 4 DIAS HABILES” is a floor, not a promise — al menos means at least. Plan for three to six weeks.
• Their guarantee terms back the long window: a Q8 credit for a delay, a refund at 20 days with no tracking update, a refund at 50 days undelivered.
• No Miami forwarder needed. The forwarder’s publicised marketplace partnership is a Costa Rica arrangement; here they would only be a middleman. Use one only for a listing that will not ship to Guatemala at all.
• We could not confirm whether Guatemalan duties are prepaid here. No tax line appeared in the cart, and the terms only say refunds will not cover customs costs or taxes. Do not assume delivered-duty-paid.

Now the part worth your money: the countdown savings are fabricated, and we measured it to the cent.

A live cart of 5 line items and 6 units totalled Q784.33 and claimed “Total ahorrado Q665.58 (-46%)” against a Q1,449.91 precio original. Summing each item’s own después de las promociones price — the honest reversion price, the one to read — came to Q842.22 exactly. So the six-hour countdown was worth Q57.89, about 7%, matching the order-summary line “Descuento de Temu para un artículo específico: -Q57.89” to the cent. The other Q607.69 was a discount off an anchor that does not exist.

Two more things in the same cart:

• Prices drift down while items sit there — one line showed "-11% que cuando se agregó". Waiting is not punished.
• The discounted listing is routinely not the cheapest listing. A filter 20-pack sat in the cart at Q30.38 while the same page’s own feed offered equivalent packs at Q14.42 and Q10.18. Re-search and sort by price before calling anything a deal.

The channels with no rate card

A family carry costs $0 in fees and is unbeatable for small, expensive, light things — minus one deduction: a US residential ship-to loses the forwarder’s tax exemption, so add back roughly 7%. Airline caps of 50 lb and 62 linear inches mean the 57-inch, roughly 100-lb resin-tank box can never fly as baggage, and even a 25-lb boxy pump eats serious suitcase budget. We have missed the window twice, both on timing rather than price — an 8-to-10-week backorder, and a kit that would have landed the day after departure. The ship-to must be the traveller’s US address, and the item must land before the flight, not ship before it. The trade is time: on the pump the carry route would have cost about Q3,670 against about Q4,850 by courier — roughly Q1,200 to have it three months earlier.

Local relay resellers are the channel nobody writes about: inside Guatemalan import groups, resellers relay Amazon items from Miami, their listings’ model field often showing the ASIN outright. On one item on 2026-08-30 the relay premium was about Q270 (~$35) over the family-carry route; on a Big Blue filter housing at Q275 the relay reseller came in at under half what self-importing it would have cost — that self-import figure is our own estimate with no read date, so it stays off the page. No rate card, so price it item by item.

When buying local simply wins

Three of our own comparisons where the import math lost:

Two standing rules came out of this:

• Never import what Guatemala produces. Cardamom is the standing example — Guatemala is the world’s top exporter. Check locally first for anything agricultural.
• A supplier-directory listing is not evidence of a local company. One “Guatemalan” water-equipment vendor turned out to be Costa Rican; those networks syndicate listings across every country site they run.

The decision table

Whatever the table says: run both calculators on your actual weight, in your actual duty category, on the day. The only rule that survived all four shipments.

Who this does not apply to

The edges of this data are real:

• This is personal-use courier and casillero math, from one household’s four 2026 shipments — not a formal commercial import through a customs agent.
• Nothing here is a paid landed cost. The softener figures are quotes for a shipment that never happened; the RO and pump landed costs are pre-shipment calculator estimates. No final courier invoice for either is on disk yet. When they arrive, this page gets an estimate-versus-actual section.
• Every duty percentage is a class one courier assigned on one date, not a tariff to rely on.
• Only the softener is documented as made in USA — that is what its declared-value line records; we did not record a country of origin for the other shipments. Sea freight by the box and a higher-tier casillero were plausible routes we never got quoted, so neither appears above.
• Rates move inside a month. Read well after 2026-09-03, this is a method, not a price list.
