Quick summary: Form N-470 concerns continuous residence for naturalization during qualifying work abroad. USCIS’s ordinary rule requires one uninterrupted year of US residence and physical presence after permanent-resident admission and filing before a continuous absence reaches one year; religious workers have an exception. G-1055 lists a general fee of $420.

If the question is the document for returning after a long trip, see the re-entry permit guide. For the citizenship application itself, see Form N-400.

Identify qualifying employment

The N-470 form asks you to select one eligibility basis. It identifies the following categories with specific conditions:

Work category on the formCondition stated on the form
US GovernmentEmployed by, or under contract with, the US Government
American research institutionPerforming scientific research
American firm, corporation or subsidiaryDevelopment of US foreign trade and commerce
American firm or corporation, property-rights workProtecting its property rights abroad where that firm or corporation engages in development of US foreign trade and commerce
Public international organizationUnited States is a member; employment started after permanent-resident admission
Denomination or missionBona fide organization in the United States; you perform ministerial or priestly functions, or your sole capacity is as a clergyman or clergywoman, missionary, brother, nun or sister

Do not assume that a job in Guatemala fits one of these categories simply because an employer has a US connection. Match the actual employment to the full form and instructions.

Check the residence history and filing date

The instructions describe an applicant who will be absent for one year or more for qualifying employment and wants to preserve continuous residence for naturalization. Except for religious workers, the applicant must have been physically present and residing in the United States without any absence for at least one year after admission as a lawful permanent resident.

USCIS says the application can be filed from abroad, but before a continuous absence reaches one year. Religious workers may apply before departure, after departure or after returning, and are not required to have lived in the United States for a specified period before filing.

Prepare the application information

The instructions ask for all trips of 24 hours or more since becoming a permanent resident, beginning with the most recent, including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. They also ask for the employment position that requires the absence and its intended duration. A religious worker filing after returning provides the entire period of qualifying work abroad.

USCIS also asks whether you have filed income taxes as a nonresident or claimed nonresident-alien tax benefits since becoming a permanent resident. Answer the actual question on the form and obtain advice about your own records.

Keep the separate requirements in view

USCIS says N-470 approval does not remove naturalization physical-presence requirements except for applicants employed by, or under contract with, the US Government. It also says a re-entry permit is still required in advance of trips expected to last one year or more.

The instructions extend the approved benefit to a spouse and dependent unmarried sons or daughters who are members of the same household and reside with the applicant abroad. They separately state that a spouse eligible for naturalization under INA 319(b) need not file N-470 to preserve residence because that provision exempts the spouse from the residence and physical-presence requirements.

The G-1055 schedule lists $420 for general filing and $0 for eligible fee-waiver applicants. For other related tasks, use the diaspora hub.
