Jurisdiction

The Embassy and Consulate of Guatemala in London serves:

  • United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland — England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland
  • Republic of Ireland — all 26 counties

Guatemala does not maintain a separate embassy in Dublin, which means Irish residents must use the London office for all in-person consular services: passport renewal, DPI, birth registration, apostille, notarial services. Some routine inquiries may be handled by email, but document issuance generally requires an in-person appointment in London.

If your place of residence is outside the UK or Ireland, use the nearest Guatemalan consulate for your jurisdiction (Madrid for Spain, Brussels for Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg, etc.). Service at a consulate outside your jurisdiction may be refused.

Services offered

Guatemalan consulates abroad typically offer the following services. Availability and turnaround time vary — confirm with the London consulate before traveling.

  • Passport — issuance and renewal of ordinary passports for Guatemalan nationals (~£105, 4-6 weeks processing)
  • DPI (Documento Personal de Identificacion) — national identity card issuance and renewal; processing may require RENAP coordination in Guatemala
  • Birth registration — registering children born in the UK or Ireland as Guatemalan nationals; recommended as early as possible after birth
  • Civil certificates — requests for birth, marriage, and death certificates from Guatemala
  • Apostille and legalization — apostilles for documents going between Guatemala and the UK/Ireland
  • Notarial services — powers of attorney, sworn statements, document authentications
  • Consular ID card — identification document for Guatemalans abroad
  • TSE voter registration — register to vote in Guatemalan general elections from the UK
  • Minor child travel authorization — for minors traveling to Guatemala without both parents
  • Emergency consular assistance — for Guatemalans facing detention, hospitalization, death of a relative, repatriation, or other emergencies in the UK or Ireland

Booking an appointment

All Guatemalan consulates worldwide now use a single centralized appointment booking system:

MINEX citas consulares portal →

  1. Open the MINEX citas portal
  2. Select the London consulate from the dropdown
  3. Choose the service you need (passport, DPI, apostille, birth registration, etc.)
  4. Pick an available date and time
  5. Complete the appointment and save or print the confirmation
  6. Arrive 15 minutes early with all original documents plus copies

Walk-in service is rarely available in London because demand is high relative to the consulate’s capacity. Booking online several weeks in advance is strongly recommended.

Passport renewal: what to bring

  • Current or expired passport
  • Valid or recently expired DPI (Guatemalan national ID)
  • Completed application form
  • Payment (~£105 in 2026, confirm form accepted: cash GBP, card, bank transfer)
  • For minors: birth certificate, both parents present or notarized authorization, ID of both parents

Processing time: 4-6 weeks. The passport is printed in Guatemala by Migracion and mailed back to the London consulate for pickup.

Ireland coverage

Because Guatemala has no embassy in Dublin, Irish residents are formally accredited to the London consulate. For Guatemalans in Ireland:

  • All in-person services (passport, DPI, apostille, birth registration, notarial) require traveling to London.
  • Email inquiries to embgtuk@minex.gob.gt are answered for general questions and document status checks.
  • Occasionally MINEX organizes a consulado movil (mobile consulate) that visits Dublin for a weekend to handle passport and DPI applications for the Irish-based Guatemalan community. These are announced 1-2 months in advance on the embassy’s social media and website.

If you live in Ireland and need urgent consular assistance (emergency repatriation, detention, hospitalization), contact the London embassy by phone immediately — they coordinate emergency response across both countries.

2026 Saturday consular service

The London consulate’s Saturday service calendar is not published on the same standard MINEX schedule as US consulates. Some Saturday or weekend appointments may be available — verify directly with the London office via the MINEX citas portal.

Emergency consular contact

For Guatemalans in the UK or Ireland facing emergencies (arrest, hospitalization, death of relative, repatriation, theft of passport):

  • Business hours: call +44 (0) 20 7351 3042
  • After hours: confirm with the embassy their emergency contact number — typically a duty officer phone for Guatemalan citizens in serious distress
  • The consulate provides: notification to family in Guatemala, list of local English-speaking lawyers (does NOT pay legal fees), assistance with emergency travel document for return to Guatemala, repatriation coordination (family covers costs)
