To find out whether you appear as a member of a political party in Guatemala, you use the same voter registration lookup run by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE). And if you want to leave a party, or were signed up without your consent, the rule is in Article 17 of the Electoral and Political Parties Law (Decree 1-85): the resignation must be express and filed with the party or with the Citizens Registry.

Quick summary: Check your status on the TSE page with your DPI/CUI (13 digits) or registration slip number, your date of birth and a verification code (the form expires in 120 seconds). According to Agencia Ocote (2026), the result shows a party-membership status. To resign, the LEPP (Art. 17) requires an express separation, filed with the party or with the Citizens Registry; whoever receives it must notify the other within 30 days at most. Nobody may belong to more than one party. According to Prensa Libre (2023), de-registration is requested in person, with your DPI, at the Political Organizations Department. TSE preliminary 2027 dates: call on January 22, elections on June 27, possible runoff on August 22.

This page is not legal advice. It sets out what the law and the TSE say, and keeps what the TSE publishes separate from what the press reported.

How to check whether you are a party member

The lookup sits in the Citizens Registry section of the TSE website: tse.org.gt/reg-ciudadanos/sistema-de-estadisticas/consulta-de-afiliacion. The TSE menu labels it Consulta de Empadronamiento (voter registration lookup), even though the page address says consulta-de-afiliacion (affiliation lookup). The form describes itself this way: “Este servicio le permite verificar sus datos registrados en la Base de Datos del Padrón Electoral” (this service lets you check your data recorded in the electoral roll database).

  1. Pick the document. The form offers No. de Boleta (registration slip) or DPI (13-digit CUI).
  2. Enter your date of birth as dd/mm/yyyy.
  3. Copy the verification code shown on screen.
  4. Submit before it expires. The form says it is valid for 120 seconds; if it lapses, reload the page.

What the result shows

The TSE form does not say what data it returns. The press does: according to Agencia Ocote (June 25, 2026), “Una vez la información haya sido verificada, el portal emitirá un estatus de afiliación a un partido político” (once the information is verified, the portal issues a party-membership status). In other words, the result tells you whether or not you appear as a member.

What the law says about party membership

Article 17 of the LEPP (text from the compilation the TSE publishes, LEPP2026.pdf) sets three rules:

RuleText of the law (Art. 17), with our translation
Joining is free“Es igualmente libre para los ciudadanos, afiliarse a las organizaciones políticas de acuerdo con su voluntad y con los estatutos de dichas organizaciones” (citizens are equally free to join political organizations according to their will and those organizations’ bylaws)
One party only“La afiliación a más de un partido político es prohibida” (membership in more than one political party is prohibited)
Resignation must be express“La separación voluntaria de un partido político debe ser expresa, presentada ante el partido político o ante el Registro de Ciudadanos” (voluntary separation from a party must be express, filed with the party or with the Citizens Registry)

The LEPP Regulation explains how a membership comes into being:

  • The membership form. Article 2(p) defines the hoja de afiliación as the document containing a citizen’s declaration “de querer formar parte de un partido político o de un comité cívico electoral inscrito y vigente, la cual, para su validez debe haber sido debidamente depurada” (of wanting to join a registered, active party or civic electoral committee, which to be valid must have been duly vetted).
  • Signature or fingerprint. Article 24 requires: “La hoja de afiliación debe contener firmas autógrafas o la impresión digital del dedo índice derecho u otro en su defecto” (the form must carry handwritten signatures or the print of the right index finger, or another finger if that is not possible). The party files the original with the Political Organizations Department for vetting, which the Department carries out “dentro de los quince días que establece la ley, si la hoja de afiliación cumple con los requisitos indicados en este artículo” (within the fifteen days set by law, if the form meets the requirements of that article) (Art. 24, as amended by TSE Agreement 58-2026 of February 26, 2026).
  • When you become a member. Under Article 26, “La calidad de afiliado a un partido político se adquiere previa depuración, a partir de la fecha de presentación ante el Registro de Ciudadanos de la hoja de afiliación” (membership is acquired after vetting, from the date the form is filed with the Citizens Registry).
  • Who answers for the data. Article 26 again: “La validez de la información vertida en las hojas de afiliación, es responsabilidad directa de las organizaciones políticas que las presenta, del ciudadano designado como responsable por el comité y de la persona que pretenda afiliarse a la misma” (the validity of the information on the forms is the direct responsibility of the organization filing them, the citizen designated as responsible by the committee, and the person seeking to join).

How to resign from a political party

What the law requires (Art. 17)

  • Express. Article 17 says the voluntary separation “debe ser expresa” (must be express): you have to file a resignation; simply ceasing to take part is not enough.
  • Filed with whom. With the political party or with the TSE Citizens Registry, your choice.
  • Notice within 30 days. “En ambos casos, quien conozca de la renuncia deberá notificarla al Registro de Ciudadanos o al Partido Político, según proceda, en un plazo no mayor de treinta días” (in both cases, whoever receives the resignation must notify the Citizens Registry or the party, as applicable, within no more than thirty days).
  • If you hold a party post. If you sit on a permanent body of the party and your resignation causes that body to break up, Article 17 requires you to confirm it in person: “el renunciante deberá ratificarla personalmente ante el Registro de Ciudadanos, la delegación departamental o subdelegación municipal del Tribunal Supremo Electoral, según sea el caso” (the person resigning must ratify it personally before the Citizens Registry or the TSE departmental delegation or municipal sub-delegation, as the case may be).

Article 155(g) of the LEPP gives the Citizens Registry the task: “Notificar a los partidos políticos de las renuncias de sus afiliados de que tenga conocimiento de conformidad con lo establecido en el artículo 17 de esta ley; y mantener actualizado el registro de afiliados de los partidos políticos” (to notify parties of their members’ resignations it learns of under Article 17, and to keep the register of party members up to date).

How it works in practice (per the press)

We did not find on the TSE website (checked September 29, 2026) an online form for resigning from a party. The steps below come from the press, not from a TSE rule:

  1. Go in person to the Political Organizations Department. Prensa Libre (January 4, 2023) wrote: “Para solicitar la desafiliación hay que presentarse al Departamento de Organizaciones Políticas, ya sea en la sede central en la zona 2 de la Ciudad de Guatemala o en las subdelegaciones a escala departamental” (to request de-registration you must go to the Political Organizations Department, at the head office in Zona 2 of Guatemala City or at the departmental sub-delegations).
  2. Bring your DPI and ask for cancellation. Per the same report: “Se deberá presentar DPI y hacer la petición para anular el registro” (you must present your DPI and request that the record be cancelled).
  3. Why in person. The TSE told Prensa Libre: “Debe ser personal porque eso garantiza que verdaderamente la persona desea renunciar a la organización” (it must be in person because that guarantees the person truly wants to leave the organization).
  4. Timing. Prensa Libre reported that the TSE took about three days to complete a de-registration. That is a figure from a 2023 news report, not a published TSE deadline; the only legal deadline is Article 17’s 30 days for notifying the resignation.

The TSE head office address, per the footer of its website, is 6a avenida 0-32 Z.2, Centro Histórico, Guatemala City. Confirm hours and requirements at 1580 or +502 2236 5000 before you go.

According to Agencia Ocote (June 2026): “Si apareces afiliado sin tu consentimiento, puedes comunicarte al TSE o presentarte al Departamento de Organizaciones Políticas, ya sea en la sede de la zona 2 o sus subdelegaciones e informar el incidente” (if you appear as a member without your consent, you can contact the TSE or go to the Political Organizations Department, at the Zona 2 office or its sub-delegations, and report the incident).

What the law does establish: a valid membership needs your handwritten signature or fingerprint (Regulation, Art. 24), and the party that filed the form answers for the validity of the data (Art. 26). We did not find, in the rules we read, a provision requiring the TSE to delete an unauthorized membership on its own motion or a specific penalty for that case, so the path is to go and report the incident and, if you want out of the party, to file an express resignation.

2027 elections: the TSE’s preliminary dates

At its June 2026 meeting with political organizations (TSE news item dated July 3, 2026), the TSE presented a preliminary electoral timetable. The TSE itself explains that “el cronograma tiene carácter preliminar, ya que deberá ser aprobado oficialmente por el Pleno de Magistrados mediante el decreto de convocatoria a elecciones” (the timetable is preliminary because the full court must formally approve it in the decree calling the elections).

Context: at the same meeting the TSE reported 24 political parties in good standing and 23 committees forming new political organizations. And according to Agencia Ocote, 10,200,659 people were registered to vote as of August 25, 2026.

If you plan to resign from a party or correct a membership before 2027, these dates are a reference, not a legal deadline for resigning: Article 17 sets no cut-off date for a resignation.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the lookup as a procedure. Looking yourself up changes nothing; it only shows what is on record. To leave a party you must file an express resignation (Art. 17).
  • Letting the form expire. It lasts 120 seconds; have your DPI and date of birth ready before opening it.
  • Assuming that dropping out is enough. Article 17 requires an express separation, filed with the party or with the Citizens Registry.
  • Confusing membership with voter registration. Being registered lets you vote; being a member means belonging to a party. They are separate records kept by the same Citizens Registry.
