How much does a private tutor cost in Guatemala? With June 2026 data: online Q55-95 per hour (Superprof Guatemala profiles list $7-12/hour), and in person Q80-150 per hour, with the top end when the tutor travels to your home in Guatemala City. Prepaid packages bring the unit rate down.

This guide gives the real hourly ranges by format and by subject, what actually moves the price, where to find a tutor — and the thing a price list will not tell you if you have just moved here from the United States: the Guatemalan school year runs on the opposite calendar to the US one, which decides when you need a tutor in the first place.

Quick summary: Online $7-12/hour (Q55-95) — maths ~$10/h average (profiles from $7), English $12 average (Superprof). In person Q80-150/hour; Q100-150 at your home in the capital. Packages of 5-10 hours discounted. Group tutoring cheaper per student. Spanish immersion for foreigners sold by the week: $150-200 in Antigua, $130-170 in Xela, $100-150 in San Pedro for 20 hours.

Dollar figures converted from quetzales on this page use the live Banguat reference rate — Q7.62 per US dollar as of 2026-09-01 — and update on their own. Where a platform publishes its own price in dollars, that dollar figure is the source figure and is quoted as published.

Worked example (arithmetic, not a quote)

Two sessions a week for a school term at the mid in-home rate of Q125/hour is 8 hours a month = Q1,000 (~$131 USD ). The same eight hours booked online at Q75/hour is Q600 (~$79 USD ). That gap — about Q400 a month — is almost entirely the tutor’s travel time, and it is the single largest lever you control.

What Raises the Rate

  • Travel to your home — factor number one. Taking the class online, or going to the tutor, saves roughly Q20-50 per hour
  • Level — university work (calculus, statistics, programming) costs more than primary school
  • Certifications — a qualified teacher, or an international language certification
  • Exam urgency — intensive preparation for university admission exams (USAC, UVG, URL) is quoted as a package
  • Zone — the capital and Antigua sit above the interior of the country

The School Calendar Decides When You Need a Tutor

This is the section that matters if you have arrived from the United States, and it has nothing to do with price.

Per our returning-family school enrolment guide, the Guatemalan school year runs January through October or November — the opposite of the US August-to-June year. The comparison that guide sets out:

US school yearGuatemalan school year
StartMid-AugustMid-January
EndEarly JuneMid-October (public) / mid-November (private)
Main breakJune-August (summer)November-January (summer)
Other breaksThanksgiving, Christmas, Spring BreakSemana Santa (March/April), some regional holidays

Three consequences follow directly from that table:

  1. The July-August arrival gap. The same guide states that a family returning in July-August faces a five-month gap before the Guatemalan school year starts in January, and names tutoring and Spanish immersion among the ways to fill it. That is the single most predictable tutoring window on the calendar, and it is long enough that a prepaid package beats hourly booking.
  2. Placement is not automatic. That guide is explicit that grade equivalency is not automatic — schools place students on testing plus the US transcript, not by matching grade numbers. Tutoring ahead of a placement test is aimed at a test, not a term.
  3. The private-school admission exam. Among the enrolment requirements the same guide lists for private schools are admission exam results, a parent interview, and a non-refundable application fee of Q200-1,500. The admission exam is a fixed, dated target — exactly the kind of objective that lets you buy a closed package instead of loose hours.

Which subject you will need depends on the school type. Our Guatemala City international schools guide splits the market into American-curriculum schools that follow a US-style K-12 programme, bilingual Guatemalan schools that teach the national MINEDUC curriculum in Spanish with strong English programmes, and International Baccalaureate schools. Our Antigua bilingual schools guide makes the same split locally: Antigua International School follows a US-style curriculum in English, while Colegio Boston follows the Guatemalan MINEDUC curriculum with reinforced English. A child moving into a Spanish-medium MINEDUC curriculum needs academic Spanish support; a child staying in a US-curriculum school does not, and needs subject tutoring instead.

One more thing worth knowing before you plan years ahead: diversificado in Guatemala is the final cycle, ages 16-18, and per the enrolment guide it is a specialised track: students choose Bachillerato en Ciencias y Letras (college prep), Perito Contador (accounting), Magisterio (teaching) or similar. The tutoring a teenager needs is track-specific, not generic.

Where to Find a Tutor

PlatformHow it works
Superprof GuatemalaProfiles with public hourly rates and packages; the first class is often free
ApprentusSimilar, with fewer profiles in Guatemala
Classifieds (Encuentra24, Facebook)Independent tutors; more negotiable rates
A recommendation from the schoolMany teachers tutor in the afternoons

For a family that has just arrived, the school recommendation is worth asking for first even though it is not the cheapest channel: a tutor already teaching in that school knows the exact curriculum and the exam format your child is being measured against.

How to Negotiate

  1. Ask for a package — 5-10 prepaid hours almost always cut the unit rate
  2. Put together a small group — 2-3 classmates in the same grade split the cost
  3. Use the trial class — many on Superprof are free; use one to assess before committing
  4. Define the objective — “pass the admission exam” lets a tutor quote a closed plan instead of loose hours
  5. Try online first — if the student concentrates well on a video call, it is the same tutor for less

Red Flags

  • Charges for the full package up front with no trial class
  • Cannot explain their method or show any training
  • “Guarantees” grades or passing an exam
  • Improvises every class with no plan and no tracking of progress

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private tutor cost per hour in Guatemala?

Online, tutors on Superprof Guatemala list $7-12 per hour (roughly Q55-95): maths at about $10/hour on average, with profiles from $7/hour, and the average price of an English class is $12. In person the range moves up — Q80-150 per hour is normal, with the top end when the tutor travels to your home in Guatemala City. Packages of 5-10 prepaid hours bring the hourly rate down.

Is online tutoring cheaper than in person?

Almost always. There is no travel and you are choosing from tutors across the whole country rather than your neighbourhood. In-home tutoring is the most expensive format because you are paying for the tutor’s travel time. The middle option is classes at the tutor’s own home or office, which appear in classifieds from around Q80/hour. Travel is the single biggest factor in the rate: going online or going to the tutor saves roughly Q20-50 per hour.

How much does a private English tutor cost in Guatemala?

The average price of a private English class on Superprof Guatemala is $12 — Superprof’s own published figure, quoted in dollars as the platform publishes it. Newer tutors and students charge less, about $7-8/hour; certified teachers with experience charge more, since TEFL or CELTA certifications push the rate up. Language academies bill by monthly programme rather than by the hour — compare on the hours you will actually study, not the headline price.

When is the school year in Guatemala, and when will my child need a tutor?

The Guatemalan school year runs January through October or November, the opposite of the US August-to-June year, per our school-enrolment guide. Public schools finish around mid-October and private schools around mid-November, with the long break November-January and Semana Santa in March or April. That guide notes a family returning in July-August faces a five-month gap before the January start and lists tutoring and Spanish immersion as the way to fill it. The other predictable trigger is the private-school admission exam, which the same guide lists among enrolment requirements.

How much do Spanish lessons cost in Guatemala?

Spanish for foreigners is its own market rather than part of the school-tutoring market. Our Spanish schools guide prices one-on-one immersion by the week for 20 hours: $150-200 in Antigua, $130-170 in Quetzaltenango and $100-150 in San Pedro La Laguna — roughly $5-10 an hour depending on the town. That is generally cheaper per hour than a private academic tutor, because immersion schools sell blocks of weekly hours rather than single sessions.

Do tutors give a discount for a package or a small group?

Both. Prepaid packages of 5-10 hours almost always cut the unit rate, and one Superprof listing works out at 10 hours for $70 — $7 per hour. Group tutoring with 2-4 students costs less per student because the fee is split. On Superprof many tutors offer the first class free, so use it to assess the fit before committing to a package.
