Guatemala’s upsides for a would-be resident from the US, Canada or the UK are a direct route to permanent residency on US$1,250 a month of pension or foreign income, mild highland weather and regulated electricity prices that CNEE held flat for November 2026 to January 2027. The downsides are a national homicide rate of 16.6 per 100,000 (August 2026), a US Level 3 advisory, a 90-day tourist stay shared with three neighbours, and a public health system that guarantees free care to people who cannot pay. Rent is mixed: the median asking rent in Guatemala City’s Zones 10, 14 and 15 is $1,400 a month on the latest listings read.
TL;DR: Each row below gives the figure, its publisher and its date. Pros: residency rules, climate, power tariffs. Cons: crime, the CA-4 clock, health-care access. Mixed: rent, which depends almost entirely on the neighbourhood.
This page puts the measured upsides and downsides in one place and links the page that holds the detail for each one.

Pro: residency is within reach on a pension
Guatemala’s residency regulation, Acuerdo IGM-016-2025, lets rentistas (people living on stable foreign income) and pensionados (people receiving a pension) go straight to permanent residency. Article 33 sets the minimum at US$1,250 a month for the individual applicant, plus US$300 for each dependent. IGM’s permanent-residency page lists the costs under Acuerdo IGM-039-2025: US$25 to file the application, US$400 for the permanent status and a US$40 annual foreigners’ fee to keep the status in good standing. That is about C$1,748 or £974 a month of qualifying income for a single applicant.
Article 4 of the same regulation adds a practical point: once you file a temporary or permanent residency application, you are authorised to stay while it is processed, and you do not fall into overstay during that period. The conditions attached to that protection are on our border-run decision page.
Con: the 90-day tourist clock is shared
If you try Guatemala on a tourist stay first, the clock is short. The UK government says British citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa, and that the period is shared with El Salvador and Nicaragua: it starts when you enter any of them and does not restart when you cross between them. The CA-4 agreement also includes Honduras, and since 31 October 2026 the UK says British citizens can visit Honduras for up to 90 days without a visa. Canada’s advice says Canadians need no tourist visa for up to 90 days.
The two governments describe the extension differently. The UK says you can extend by up to 30 days by paying a fee before the 90 days run out. Canada says you may request an extension equal to the days you were first authorised, up to a maximum stay of 180 days in Guatemala. Our CA-4 border run page covers the prórroga and the overstay fine; check the current rule with IGM before you rely on either reading.
Con: crime, unevenly spread
The Observatorio de la Violencia at Asociación Civil Diálogos, which works from Policía Nacional Civil records and INE population projections, put the national homicide rate at 16.6 per 100,000 for the twelve months to August 2026. That was 5.9% below the rate a year earlier. It counted 2,071 homicides from January to August 2026.
The governments that advise travellers point to specific areas rather than the whole country:
- United States: Level 3, Reconsider Travel (updated 11 March 2026), with San Marcos and Huehuetenango departments, Zone 18 of Guatemala City and the city of Villa Nueva called out by name.
- Canada: a high degree of caution overall, and avoid non-essential travel to Guatemala City’s Zones 1, 3, 5-7, 18 and 21 because of very high levels of violent crime.
Our safety page has the rate for each department and the neighbourhood lists. Where you live inside a city matters more than the national figure.
Mixed: rent depends on the zone
The site’s cost-of-living feed reads asking rents from Encuentra24 listings. On its latest read (2026-10-26), the median was $1,400 a month across 586 listings in Guatemala City’s Zones 10, 14 and 15, $850 across 106 listings in Zones 1, 4 and 7, Mixco and Villa Nueva, and $1,675 across 15 listings in Antigua. The feed flags its own limits: these are asking prices on one portal, not signed leases, and the listed stock skews furnished and expat-facing.
For the full monthly budgets and how each line is built, see the cost-of-living guide.
Mixed: electricity is regulated, and the price depends on your distributor
The CNEE, the electricity regulator, kept every regulated tariff unchanged for 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027:
| Distributor | Social tariff (Q/kWh) | Non-social tariff (Q/kWh) |
|---|---|---|
| EEGSA | 1.42 | 1.51 |
| Energuate DEOCSA | 2.03 | 2.12 |
| Energuate DEORSA | 1.98 | 2.06 |
CNEE says about 3.9 million users, 93% of the three distributors’ customers, are on the social tariff. The gap between distributors is the con: on the social tariff, DEOCSA’s rate is about 43% higher than EEGSA’s. Q1.42 is about US$0.19, C$0.26 or £0.14 per kWh. Which distributor serves which area, the numbers for reporting an outage and the planned-maintenance schedules are on our power outages page.
Mixed: health care has three routes, and free care is guaranteed to people who cannot pay
Article 4 of the Health Code (Decreto 90-97) commits the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) to provide free services to people and families whose personal income does not let them pay for part or all of their care. The law frames free care around people who cannot pay; it does not spell out what residents with money are charged.
The social security institute, IGSS, is not a back door either. Its March 2026 FAQ on the voluntary contribution says the benefits do not include medical services; that contribution only keeps up pension coverage.
Private care is paid out of pocket or through insurance. As one published price, TecniScan showed a brain MRI at Q3,353.00 on 4 November 2026 (about US$439, C$614 or £342). Our healthcare page explains the three routes (MSPAS, IGSS, private) and our retiree healthcare guide covers hospitals and insurance.
Pro: the highland climate
The site’s month-by-month climate page uses a 30-year reanalysis series (Open-Meteo ERA5, 1996-2025). In the highlands and on the Pacific coast, November to April is dry and May to October brings roughly 80-91% of the year’s rain. Antigua averages about 25°C by day and 14°C at night in January. Petén is driest and hottest from February to April, and the Caribbean side gets rain in every month; the details are on best time to visit, month by month.
What this page does not score
Internet speed and price vary by address and by provider; the plans and coverage by city are on our internet guide. Grocery and restaurant costs in the cost-of-living feed are partly editorial estimates, so they are not used as a pro or a con here.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main advantages of living in Guatemala?
A short path to permanent residency if you have a pension or steady foreign income: IGM’s residency regulation (Acuerdo IGM-016-2025, Art. 33) sets US$1,250 a month for the principal applicant plus US$300 per dependent, and IGM lists US$25 to file, US$400 for the permanent status and a US$40 annual fee. Highland weather is mild: Antigua averages about 25°C by day and 14°C at night in January (1996-2025 reanalysis on our best-time page). Regulated electricity tariffs were held unchanged by CNEE for November 2026 to January 2027.
What are the main disadvantages of living in Guatemala?
Crime and the tourist-stay limit. The national homicide rate was 16.6 per 100,000 in the twelve months to August 2026, according to the Observatorio de la Violencia of Asociación Diálogos (PNC data), and the US State Department rates Guatemala Level 3: Reconsider Travel. A tourist stay is up to 90 days shared with El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, and crossing between them does not restart it; since 31 October 2026 British citizens can visit Honduras, the fourth CA-4 country, without a visa (UK government). By law, public health care is free for people whose income cannot cover it.
Is Guatemala a safe place to live?
It depends heavily on where. Nationally, 2,071 homicides were recorded from January to August 2026 and the rate stood at 16.6 per 100,000, 5.9% below a year earlier (Diálogos, August 2026 report). Canada advises against non-essential travel to Guatemala City’s Zones 1, 3, 5-7, 18 and 21, and the US advisory singles out Zone 18 and Villa Nueva. Our safety page breaks the rate down by department.
Can Americans or Canadians live in Guatemala permanently?
Yes, through residency. Pensioners and people living on foreign income (rentistas) can apply for permanent residency directly under Art. 33 of Acuerdo IGM-016-2025 with at least US$1,250 a month, plus US$300 per dependent. Art. 4 of the same regulation says filing a residency application authorises you to stay in the country while it is processed, so you do not fall into overstay during that period.
Is healthcare free for foreigners in Guatemala?
Not as a blanket rule. Article 4 of Guatemala’s Health Code (Decreto 90-97) commits the health ministry to provide free services to people and families whose income does not let them pay for part or all of their care. IGSS’s voluntary contribution covers pensions only: its March 2026 FAQ says the benefits do not include medical services. Private care is paid; TecniScan, a private imaging chain, showed a brain MRI at Q3,353.00 on 4 November 2026.
How much is rent in Guatemala?
On the cost-of-living feed’s Encuentra24 read of 26 October 2026, the median asking rent was US$1,400 a month in Guatemala City Zones 10, 14 and 15 (586 listings) and US$1,676 in Antigua (15 listings). These are asking prices on one listings portal, and the stock skews furnished and expat-facing; our cost-of-living guide carries the current read.
