Antigua: Chabad Antigua and Daria’s Kitchen

Chabad Antigua’s kosher page says kosher food is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner from Daria’s Kitchen at Chabad Lubavitch in Antigua, in large and small quantities, to eat in or take away. It describes Sephardic and Ashkenazi dishes, Israeli food, sandwiches, burgers and fries, and fresh pita baked daily in its own bakery, which it says packs well for travelling. It asks people with special requirements to say so. The house is led by Rabbi Chaim and his wife, Daria.

The online menu says the kitchen is open 7:30 am to 10:00 pm, last order 10:00 pm. The menu gives no days for these hours, and they don’t match the contact page’s house hours (opening 9:00 am, closing 4:00 pm on Friday); confirm before you go. Some prices from it:

DishPrice
Omelet BaguetteGTQ 50
Israeli SaladGTQ 50

Shawarma BaguetteGTQ 100
Schnitzel BaguetteGTQ 100
Shawarma PlateGTQ 140

The menu marks the fries “Hand-cut french fries (meat fryer)”, and lists meat dishes such as shawarma, schnitzel and a beef burger alongside dishes it tags vegetarian or vegan. Ask the kitchen how it separates meat and dairy if that matters for your order.

Shabbat: Chabad Antigua’s Shabbat page offers Friday-night and Shabbat-day meals, which it calls home-cooked and kosher, with traditional prayers. It states “RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED” and links to a booking form to reserve and pay.

House hours on the contact page: Monday-Thursday 9:00 am-11:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am-4:00 pm, Saturday open for Shabbat, Sunday 9:00 am-8:00 pm. The about page adds daily kosher dining, Sephardic and Ashkenazi Shabbat and Yom Tov meals, minyanim on weekdays by request, and help arranging tours and shuttles. San Pedro La Laguna: Chabad of Pedro

Chabad of Pedro’s site lists kosher places in San Pedro La Laguna on Lake Atitlán. All three listings point their navigation link to Chabad Pedro La Laguna, San Pedro La Laguna.

The FAQ page lists the Chabad house services as a visitor centre, Friday-night meals, Shabbat meals, daily prayers and Shabbat prayers, and says Shabbat and holiday meals are held upon prior registration through the site’s form. The traveller information and FAQ pages both state “There is no Eruv in Pedro”. The FAQ links a list of mikvahs and a list of hotels near the Chabad house. Guatemala City: Chabad and the Jewish community

Chabad Lubavitch of Guatemala is at 9 Calle 14-64, Zona 13, Guatemala City 01013, phone 502-2498-3770. Its site menu lists a Synagogue, Deli Kosher - Pesach Items, a Bakery, Kosher Food at Chabad, Hotels and Shabbat Hospitality. The menu does not show deli or bakery hours; ask the house directly. If you are only passing through on a connection, our long layover in Guatemala City page covers leaving La Aurora between flights.

The Comunidad Judía de Guatemala describes itself as an Orthodox, Zionist and modern Jewish institution and the Jewish point of reference in Guatemala for more than 100 years. Its site lists its address as Zona 9, Guatemala City, phone (502) 2201-1500, and email cjg@comunidadjudia.com. Its kosher section is titled Certificación Kosher, and the kosher page’s meta description says the community provides internationally valid kosher certificates.

  • Guatemala City has two Orthodox synagogues, Maguen David and Sharei Binyamin, and a Reform synagogue, Adat Israel;
  • about 1,000 Jews lived in the country as of 2021, citing the US State Department’s religious freedom report.

Kosher Centro America, linked from Chabad Lubavitch of Guatemala’s Kosher Certification menu item, describes itself as a kosher certification service for food products in Latin America, with a Guatemala phone of +(502) 2498 3800. Its homepage addresses companies that want their products certified.

Planning around Shabbat

  • Friday hours are short. Chabad Antigua’s house closes at 4:00 pm on Friday, and Chabad of Pedro’s espresso bar at 17:00 on Friday, reopening at 19:00 on Saturday.
  • Carrying in San Pedro: both Chabad of Pedro pages state that there is no eruv.
