In short: Apple lists Guatemala as an Apple Pay country and names 9 participating issuers: Agromercantil, BAC Credomatic, Banco de los Trabajadores, Banco Ficohsa, Banco G&T, Banco Industrial, Banrural, Promerica and Tarjetas Cuscatlan. Google’s Wallet pages, with Guatemala selected, say tap to pay is supported and list 15 Guatemalan issuers. Four banks publish their own Apple Pay page (Banco Industrial, BAM, Banrural, Promerica). Whether a particular shop takes your phone is decided at the till: Apple says the terminal must have NFC contactless enabled and the merchant must accept your card’s network; Google says you can pay wherever Google Pay is accepted, with an NFC-equipped Android phone.

All lists below were read on 1 October 2026 from Apple, Google, Visa Guatemala and the banks’ own websites. Issuer lists change; the bank decides which of its cards can be added.

Two different readers, two different questions

  • A visitor tapping a foreign card. Your card’s issuer has to support Apple Pay or Google Wallet in your country, and the Guatemalan shop has to take contactless payments on your card’s network. The Guatemalan issuer lists below are about cards issued in Guatemala.
  • A Guatemalan cardholder. The question is whether your bank is enrolled. That is what the issuer lists and bank pages below answer.

What Apple says

Apple’s country page says: “You can add your credit, debit, or prepaid cards from participating banks and card issuers in these countries and regions”. Guatemala is listed under Latin America and the Caribbean.

Apple’s participating-issuer page lists these for Guatemala, in Apple’s order:

#Issuer named by Apple
1Agromercantil
2BAC Credomatic
3Banco de los Trabajadores
4Banco Ficohsa
5Banco G&T
6Banco Industrial
7Banrural
8Promerica
9Tarjetas Cuscatlan, S.A.

The same page warns: “Some cards from participating banks might not be supported in Apple Pay. Contact your bank for more information.”

In stores, Apple’s “Learn where to use Apple Pay” page sets the conditions: “In addition to accepting Apple Pay, a merchant must accept your card’s payment network. For in-store purchases, the merchant’s payment devices must have NFC Contactless enabled.” Apple also warns that a reader can carry the contactless symbol without currently being set up to accept contactless payments, Apple Pay included. Apple’s advice is “To confirm where you can use Apple Pay, contact the merchant.”

What Google says

Google has two relevant help pages, and both are set per country.

  1. Supported countries for Google Wallet & tap to pay. Guatemala is in the country selector. With Guatemala selected, the page says: “Your country supports tap to pay on phones, smartwatches with Wear OS, and Fitbit devices.” (For comparison, the same page with Afghanistan selected shows no tap-to-pay section.)
  2. Find supported payment methods. With Guatemala selected, it lists the issuers below. The “Unsupported cards” column was empty for every Guatemalan row.
Issuer (as Google writes it)Cards Google lists as supported
Banco Agromercantil de Guatemala, S.A.Visa cards

MIGO PAYMENTS GUATEMALA S.A.Mastercard credit

Tarjetas CUSCATLAN, S.A.Visa cards

Google’s own caveats on that page: “Your bank decides if its cards work with Google Wallet. Banks can restrict any of their cards from making mobile payments.” And: “To make contactless payments with Google Wallet, you need to have an Android phone with Near Field Communication (NFC).”

What Visa Guatemala says

Visa’s Guatemala site names a shorter list for Visa cards on Apple Pay: “En Guatemala, Apple Pay funciona con las tarjetas de crédito y débito Visa de los siguientes emisores: Banco Promerica, BAC Credomatic, GyT Continental, Banco Industrial y Contecnica.”

The lists do not match exactly. Contecnica is on Visa’s sentence and on Google’s table but not on Apple’s issuer list. BAM, Banrural, Ficohsa, Banco de los Trabajadores and Cuscatlan are on Apple’s list but not in Visa’s sentence. We report each list as published rather than merging them.

What the banks’ own pages say

G&T ContinentalCould not readgytcontinental.com.gt did not load on 1 Oct 2026 (both a script and a Chrome browser failed to connect). G&T appears on the Apple, Visa Guatemala and Google lists above.

The four Apple Pay pages we could read do not mention Google Wallet. Google’s table above is the only source we read for Google Wallet issuers.

If your phone payment is declined

What the sources above tell you to check, in order:

  1. The terminal. Apple says a store’s reader must have NFC contactless enabled, and that a contactless symbol on the reader does not guarantee it is switched on.
  2. The network. Apple says the merchant must accept your card’s network (Visa, Mastercard, Amex).
  3. The card. Google says your bank decides which of its cards work with Google Wallet; Apple says some cards from participating banks might not be supported and to contact your bank. Call the number on the back of the card.

For paying by card or cash more generally, including ATM fees on US cards, see US cards and dollars in Guatemala and which ATM cards work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Apple Pay work in Guatemala?

Apple lists Guatemala among the countries where you can add cards from participating banks and card issuers (Apple Support, ‘Countries and regions that support Apple Pay’, read 2026-10-01). Apple’s issuer list for Guatemala names 9: Agromercantil, BAC Credomatic, Banco de los Trabajadores, Banco Ficohsa, Banco G&T, Banco Industrial, Banrural, Promerica and Tarjetas Cuscatlan, S.A. Whether a given shop can take it is a separate question: Apple says the merchant must accept your card’s network and, in stores, have NFC contactless enabled on its payment device.

Does Google Pay (Google Wallet) work in Guatemala?

Google’s ‘Supported countries for Google Wallet & tap to pay’ page lists Guatemala in its country selector, and with Guatemala selected it says: ‘Your country supports tap to pay on phones, smartwatches with Wear OS, and Fitbit devices.’ Google’s ‘Find supported payment methods’ page lists 15 Guatemalan issuers for Google Wallet (read 2026-10-01). Google adds that your bank decides whether its cards work, and that contactless payments need an Android phone with NFC.

Can I use Apple Pay in Guatemala with a US card?

Apple’s own pages describe two separate conditions: your card has to come from a participating issuer in a supported country (the US is on Apple’s list), and the store has to accept the card’s network with NFC contactless switched on at the terminal. Apple also says some readers carry the contactless symbol without being set up to accept it, and tells shoppers to confirm with the merchant. Apple’s pages do not mention foreign cards used in Guatemala specifically.

Which Guatemalan banks support Apple Pay on their own website?

On 2026-10-01 we found Apple Pay pages on the sites of Banco Industrial (enrolment steps for a Bi card), BAM (Bam Visa credit and debit cards), Banrural (Banrural debit or credit card) and Banco Promerica (all its Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards). Banco G&T Continental’s website did not load for us that day, so we could not read its own page; G&T is on Apple’s, Visa Guatemala’s and Google’s lists.

Does adding a BAM card to Apple Pay cost anything?

BAM’s Apple Pay page says: ‘Con tu tarjeta Bam este servicio no genera costos adicionales’ (with your Bam card the service carries no additional cost). The other bank pages we read did not mention a fee either way.
