Sunrise and Sunset Times in Guatemala: Today for 22 Cities, the Week for Antigua, Atitlán, Tikal and Acatenango

Every time on this page is Guatemala time, which is UTC-6 all year: the country has not changed its clocks since 2006, so sunrise and sunset drift with the seasons and never jump by an hour. Two feeds fill the tables. The first covers today for every departmental capital; the second gives the week ahead for four destinations that each have their own forecast page on this site.

The week ahead at Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Tikal and Acatenango

These are astronomical times. Whether you see the sun at that minute depends on cloud, which is the question the destination weather pages answer with an hour-by-hour forecast:

• Tikal: Tikal weather shows forecast cloud cover and rain chance in the 5 and 6 AM hours, the window a Tikal sunrise tour is sold on.
• Acatenango: Acatenango summit weather gives the overnight low, wind chill and gusts on the summit for each night of the week, for the overnight hike.
• Lake Atitlán: Lake Atitlán weather splits the wind into morning and afternoon, useful before the Indian Nose sunrise hike and the boat back.
• Antigua: Antigua weather shows when in the day the rain is forecast.

Reading the tables

• Sunrise and sunset are astronomical times computed for each table’s coordinates (the city, or the model point). A volcano, a ridge or a cloud bank on your horizon changes the moment you actually see the sun.
• First light and last light (city table) are astronomical dawn and dusk as sunrisesunset.io defines them: the faintest brightening of the sky, and its last trace.
• Day length is sunrise to sunset.
• The city table is for one day, the day the feed last ran (printed above the table). The destination table covers up to seven days from its own feed date; days already past are dropped when the page is rebuilt.

Where these numbers come from

• City table: sunrisesunset.io, queried once a day for the coordinates of each departmental capital. If one city’s request fails, that city keeps its previous values rather than dropping out (the stamp does not show this per city). If the whole run fails, the previous file stays in place and the stamp turns red once it is more than 50 hours old.
• Destination table: the Open-Meteo forecast API’s daily sunrise and sunset, read once a day for fixed points: the same Antigua and Panajachel points as our national forecast, Tikal at the coordinates in UNESCO’s World Heritage listing, and the Acatenango summit. On a failed read the previous file stays in place: days already past are dropped when the page is rebuilt, and the stamp turns red once the forecast is more than 26 hours old.
