Dates: 2026 and what is known about 2027
The Municipalidad de Guatemala announced the 2026 edition for 6–19 July: two weeks, beginning on Monday and ending on Sunday, encompassing the 16 July feast day. Publinews, in its report dated 3 July 2026, published a different range, 4–19 July. The municipal announcement, La Hora and Prensa Libre gave 6–19 July, which is the range used here. A subsequent municipal report described the feria’s final days and invited visitors to attend through 19 July; it was an invitation during the event, rather than confirmation of its eventual closing day.
For 2027: dates were not announced as of 23 October 2026 in the municipal information checked. The recurring feast day does not establish the next feria’s opening and closing dates.
Opening hours
The municipality’s announcement for 2026 gave 10:00 to 22:00. La Hora, attributing its information to the municipality, broke this down as 10:00 to 22:00 from Sunday to Thursday, and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Prensa Libre also published 10:00 to 22:00, without distinguishing days. These were the published hours for the past edition.
What is there: food and games
According to the Municipalidad de Guatemala’s 2026 announcement:
- Food and sweets: traditional sweets, fairground treats, chuchitos, atol, tostadas and churrasquitos.
- Games: los cincos, la pesca, la lotería and la rueda de Chicago. The Dirección de Comercio Popular, cited by Prensa Libre, also mentioned fairground rides such as bumper cars.
- Prices: Prensa Libre listed admission as free and said game and snack prices varied by type and stall.
Security and services (2026): the municipality announced lighting, cleaning and security, with support from the Policía Municipal (municipal police), Policía Municipal de Tránsito (municipal traffic police), Limpia y Verde staff, Dirección de Comercio Popular supervisors and Policía Nacional Civil (national civil police) officers.
The religious side
The feria is rooted in devotion to the Virgen del Carmen. Prensa Libre’s July 2024 account identifies the procession of the Virgen del Cerrito del Carmen as one of its main traditions. It also recounts that in 1615, the anniversary of the hermitage’s dedication was celebrated with valley residents and devotees from neighbouring towns. The same article reports that in 1891, the Diario de Centro América described the July feria of the Virgen del Carmen at the hill, along with marimba and military-band concerts. These are historical accounts, rather than a programme for the next edition.
Cerrito del Carmen: why the place matters
- The temple: according to the Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes (Ministry of Culture and Sports), as cited by La Hora, the hilltop temple was built between 1613 and 1615, in masonry with a pitched tile roof. Prensa Libre’s July 2024 account gives a different completion date: a first temple begun in 1613 and completed in 1620. Citing the sanctuary’s rector, it adds that the first building burned down. La Hora also attributes to the ministry the account that Juan Corz, a Genoese religious tertiary of the Orden de San Francisco (Franciscan order), brought the image to Guatemala. The conflicting completion dates remain unresolved here.
- Older than the city: the municipality said the site already existed when the capital moved to Valle de la Ermita, and played a role in laying out the new city. Its 2026 announcement placed the celebration in the context of the 250th anniversary of the move.
- Heritage: La Hora, citing the ministry, describes the site as Patrimonio Cultural y Natural de la Nación (national cultural and natural heritage) and cites Decreto Legislativo 26-97. That is a general heritage-protection law; the citation alone does not establish an individual designation for this site. Prensa Libre separately reports that article 2 of Acuerdo 1210 of the Ministerio de Educación (Ministry of Education), dated 12 June 1970, declared the hill cultural heritage of the Hispanic period. This is Prensa Libre’s historical attribution; the original agreement has not been independently verified here.
