Why Pet Relocation to Guatemala Is a 4-6 Month Project
British movers regularly underestimate how long pet import setup takes. The headline reason: the FAVN rabies titre test.
The titre is a blood test that measures rabies antibodies. The pet must have been vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before the blood draw. Most UK labs (APHA Weybridge being the main one) take 3-4 weeks to return results. So from the rabies vaccine to titre confirmation is 7-9 weeks at minimum.
Stack on top: 4-week MAGA import permit lead time, 10-day validity windows on the AHC + EHC, airline booking 2-3 months out for cargo, and possible re-tests if the first titre comes back below threshold. Realistic timeline: 4-6 months from “we’re thinking about it” to “the dog lands at La Aurora.”
Start the vet conversation the moment you’ve decided to move.
The Six Required Documents
1. Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)
The pet must have an ISO-compliant microchip implanted before the rabies vaccine. If your pet was chipped years ago, confirm the chip is ISO standard — older UK chips (FECAVA, AVID Eurochip) may not be readable by Guatemalan scanners. If non-compliant, re-chip with an ISO chip. Both chip numbers must appear on all subsequent paperwork.
2. Rabies Vaccination (Minimum 30 Days Before Travel)
Administered after the microchip is in. Vaccine must be a WHO/OIE-approved inactivated rabies vaccine. The vet records the chip number, vaccine batch, manufacturer, and date on the pet’s record.
If your pet’s rabies vaccination is already current and was given AFTER the microchip, you don’t need to re-vaccinate. Boosters within the manufacturer’s validity window count.
3. FAVN Rabies Titre Test
A blood sample sent to an approved lab (APHA Weybridge for UK) measures rabies antibodies. Pass threshold: >=0.5 IU/ml. Sample must be drawn at least 30 days after the rabies vaccine. Lab turnaround: 3-4 weeks. Cost ~£75-120 per pet.
If the titre comes back below 0.5 IU/ml: re-vaccinate and re-test. This is why starting 4-6 months early matters — there’s no fast fix for a failed titre.
4. Animal Health Certificate (AHC) — UK Official Veterinarian
A UK government-authorised vet (Official Veterinarian, OV) examines the pet, checks documentation, and issues an AHC within 10 days of travel. The AHC confirms the pet is fit to travel and matches the chip + vaccine + titre records.
5. GB Export Health Certificate (EHC) — APHA/DEFRA
Separate from the AHC. The EHC is issued by APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency, part of DEFRA) and is the official UK government export certificate. Also valid for 10 days. Your OV applies through APHA’s portal.
Both AHC and EHC are typically organised at the same vet visit — the OV completes the AHC and submits the EHC application simultaneously, with EHC returned digitally + paper.
6. MAGA Import Permit (Guatemalan Side)
Apply through MAGA (Ministerio de Agricultura, Ganaderia y Alimentacion) around 30 days before arrival. The permit confirms Guatemala accepts your pet under the documentation provided. Fee approximately Q150-300 (£15-30).
Application can be done by:
- The owner directly (Spanish-language form, requires a Guatemalan address and contact)
- A Guatemalan customs broker or pet relocation agent
- A pet relocation specialist (PetAir UK, Animalcouriers) handling the whole move

Airlines That Carry Pets UK to Guatemala
No direct UK-Guatemala flights exist, so every pet route is multi-leg. Best options:
Iberia (LHR → Madrid → GUA)
- In-cabin: small pets up to ~8kg, soft IATA-approved carrier, ~€150-200 per leg
- Cargo: larger pets, full IATA service, well-regarded
- Pros: Single airline both legs, simpler paperwork, fewest connections
- Recommended for most Brits
Air France / KLM (LHR → CDG/AMS → GUA)
- Excellent animal welfare reputation
- Cargo handling at AMS/CDG is among the best in Europe
- In-cabin available on most routes
American Airlines (LHR → MIA/DFW → GUA)
- In-cabin small pets and cargo
- Miami connection generally smooth
Lufthansa (LHR → FRA → GUA via partner)
- Frankfurt’s Lufthansa Animal Lounge is one of the best in the world for cargo pets
- Cargo specialty — recommended for large or sensitive pets
Avoid
- Budget carriers (Ryanair, Wizz, EasyJet) don’t carry pets internationally
- Multi-airline ticket combinations where the pet has to be re-checked between carriers — too much risk
In-Cabin vs Cargo: How to Choose
| Factor | In-Cabin | Cargo |
|---|---|---|
| Pet weight (incl. carrier) | Under ~8kg | Any weight |
| Owner travels with pet | Yes | Either |
| Cost per leg | £100-250 | £400-1,000 |
| Stress level for pet | Lower | Higher (but cargo holds are pressurised + temperature-controlled) |
| Paperwork complexity | Lower | Higher (specialist usually engaged) |
| Breed restrictions | Strict size limit + airline breed list | Snub-nosed restrictions, banned breeds |
Most Brits with small dogs or cats fly in-cabin with Iberia (Madrid stopover). Larger dogs go cargo with KLM or Lufthansa, usually via a specialist.
What Happens at La Aurora Airport on Arrival
- Pet arrives in cargo hold or in-cabin with owner.
- MAGA veterinary inspection at the airport — paperwork checked against the pet (chip scan).
- If everything matches: cleared, hand-walked out of customs with you.
- If anything’s missing or mismatched: pet may be held pending paperwork resolution. Rare with proper prep but expensive when it happens.
Tip: Print 3 copies of every document. Keep one set on you (in-cabin) and one with the pet (cargo). Email digital copies to your Guatemalan vet in advance.
Restricted Breeds (Airline-Specific)
Guatemala itself has no breed bans. Airlines restrict:
Banned from cargo and cabin by most carriers:
- Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- Bull Terrier (sometimes)
- Tosa, Fila Brasileiro
- Certain Mastiff variants (Dogo Argentino, Presa Canario)
Restricted for cargo (welfare reasons — snub-nosed breeds):
- Pugs, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Pekingese
- Boxer, Bull Mastiff, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso
- Persian, Himalayan, Burmese cats
Some airlines refuse snub-nosed breeds outright; others accept them only in cooler months (Oct-Apr). Check the specific airline’s pet policy 6 months out.
Post-Arrival: Vets in Guatemala
Guatemala has international-quality veterinary clinics in Guatemala City, Antigua, and Cayala. Common ones:
- Antigua: Hospital Veterinario Antigua, several small clinics in Zone 3
- Guatemala City: Hospital Veterinario Central, Petlandia (zone 14), VetMax
- Cayala: Multiple modern clinics with English-speaking vets
Vaccine schedule continues on the Guatemalan calendar. Tick and flea preventatives matter — the tropical climate means year-round parasite pressure. Heartworm prevention is also recommended (much higher prevalence than the UK).
Routine pet costs in Guatemala are 40-60% lower than UK private vets — annual check-up ~£25-40, vaccinations ~£20-35, neuter/spay £80-200.
