In short: The six US payment apps split into three groups, and the split is not about fees — it is about whether the provider lists Guatemala at all. PayPal lists Guatemala as a supported market at its “Send, receive, and withdraw” tier. Venmo and Zelle exclude it by contract — both require the user to be in the US with a US bank account. Cash App and Revolut function here only as cards, not as accounts: neither lets you sign up from Guatemala, but both explicitly permit card use here. Wise is the unresolved one — Guatemala and GTQ are absent from all three of Wise’s own Help Centre coverage lists, while a Wise marketing page advertises the corridor.
This page answers a narrow question: does this app function for me while I am in Guatemala? It is not a remittance comparison. If your question is “what is the cheapest way to send money from the US to a family member in Guatemala”, that is a different question with a different answer — see the remittances hub and the USA-to-Guatemala corridor page.
Everything below comes from each provider’s own published coverage or terms documentation, retrieved 11 August 2026. Deliberately no fee tables: published fee schedules change without notice, coverage tiers do not. Where a provider does not list Guatemala, that absence is reported as the answer rather than filled in.
The acceptance table
| Provider | Open an account from Guatemala? | Hold a balance | Withdraw to a Guatemalan bank | Card usable in Guatemala | GTQ supported |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal | Yes — listed, tier “Send, receive, and withdraw” (GT) | Yes, but not in GTQ | Bank-transfer flow is documented on PayPal’s GT help site | n/a (PayPal is not a card issuer here) | No — GTQ absent from PayPal’s currency-code list |
| Venmo | No — “must be in the United States and have a U.S. bank account” | No | No | Yes — the sole documented carve-out | No |
| Cash App | No — account features “unavailable outside the US or UK” | No | No | Yes — Guatemala not on the exclusion list; 3% international use fee | Not published |
| Zelle | No — both parties need US bank accounts | No | No | No card product | No |
| Wise | Not listed in the hold-money residency list | Not listed | Not listed as a send-to country | Card is separate from corridor coverage | No — GTQ absent from the currency list |
| Revolut | No — Guatemala absent from the sign-up list | No | No | Yes — Guatemala not on the card-exclusion list | Spending, at least — GTQ is on the spending list; Revolut publishes no holding list |
Read the last column carefully. “Supported country” and “supported currency” are two different tests at every one of these providers, and most confusion about Guatemala comes from collapsing them.
PayPal: listed, but not localised, and never in quetzales
PayPal publishes a country-capability table with four named tiers. Guatemala’s row reads “Send, receive, and withdraw” with country code GT (PayPal Developer, Countries and supported features, retrieved 2026-08-11). PayPal defines that tier as: merchants can initiate payouts from the country, and account holders can receive funds and withdraw balances.
The interesting part is the tier Guatemala does not have. PayPal reserves “Send, receive, and withdraw in local currency” for a different set of countries — Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, the Philippines and others — and “Fully localized” for a third set. Guatemala sits in the plain tier.
That is consistent with PayPal’s currency documentation: PayPal’s published REST currency-code reference lists 25 currencies and the Guatemalan quetzal is not one of them (PayPal Developer, Currency Codes, page dated last updated 13 July 2026, retrieved 2026-08-11). PayPal’s own payouts guidance for Latin America says payouts go out in USD, with recipients withdrawing their balance in local currency from their bank.
Practical reading: a PayPal account operated from Guatemala is a USD-denominated account. The quetzal conversion, if any, happens at the bank end, not inside PayPal.
PayPal does operate a Spanish-language Guatemalan site (paypal.com/gt), and its Guatemalan help article on transferring a balance to a bank account describes the standard Wallet → Transfer funds → Transfer to your bank account flow, with standard transfers normally completing in one business day and up to 3-5 depending on the bank’s clearing process (PayPal GT help article help394, retrieved 2026-08-11). That article’s footnote listing markets where a local bank transfer can take up to 7 business days names Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, Peru and others — and does not name Guatemala. We report that as published; we did not find a PayPal document that states which specific Guatemalan banks can be linked, and no such list appeared to exist as of 2026-08-11.
Venmo and Zelle: excluded by their own terms
These two are the cleanest answers on the page because both providers write the exclusion into their own documents.
Venmo. The Venmo User Agreement (a contract with PayPal, Inc.) opens with: “You must be in the United States and have a U.S. bank account to use the Venmo services.” Account creation requires being “a resident of the United States or one of its territories.” And the Restricted Activities section lists, as a restricted activity, “Access the Venmo services from outside the United States, except for use of the Venmo Debit Card.”
That last clause is the one worth knowing. The Venmo Debit Card is the only documented carve-out from the geographic restriction, and the agreement adds that “For Venmo Debit Card transactions, Mastercard will perform the currency conversion, except for Venmo Debit Card transactions with an authorized merchant, for which Venmo will perform the currency conversion.” So a Venmo card swipe in Guatemala is a Mastercard cross-border transaction converted by Mastercard, unless the merchant is one Venmo has authorised — and the agreement does not publish which merchants those are.
Zelle. The Zelle Help Center answers the question in one line: “In order to use Zelle, the sender and recipient’s must have U.S bank accounts” (zelle.com, retrieved 2026-08-11; the punctuation is theirs). There is no Guatemalan enrolment path, no card, and no receiving leg. A US relative cannot Zelle money to a Guatemalan account.
Cash App and Revolut: the card works, the account does not
Both providers draw the same line, and both draw it explicitly.
Cash App publishes a help article, Travel and International Transactions, structured as an exclusion list: “The Cash App Card is supported in all countries except the following”, followed by 27 countries. Guatemala is not on that list. The same article states a 3% international use fee when the card is used in a supported country or with an international online merchant, waivable for card-present transactions for customers who qualify for Cash App Green. It then closes the door on everything else: “Other Cash App features are unavailable outside the US or UK. This includes sending a P2P payment, adding funds, and withdrawing funds.”
Revolut does the same in two documents. Where you can sign up for Revolut lists the eligible countries: Australia, Brazil, the EEA, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Mexico on a waiting list until launch in 2026, plus a set of overseas territories. Guatemala is on none of those lists. But Where can I use my Revolut card? says the card works “in any country where Visa or Mastercard are supported” except a named exclusion list — for the Americas, only Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Guatemala is not excluded. And Revolut’s What currencies are supported for spending? article does include GTQ in its supported-spending list. The holding-versus-spending distinction is drawn in Where can I use my Revolut card?, which states: “If you can’t select a currency in-app to exchange your money to, it means it’s not currently supported for holding (keeping in your account). However, you might still be able to make purchases if it’s supported for spending.” Revolut does not publish a separate list of currencies supported for holding, so which side of that line GTQ falls on is not something we can settle from Revolut’s published documentation.
So the honest sentence for both: you cannot open one from Guatemala; if you already have one, the card spends here.
Wise: the one we could not reconcile
Wise is the provider where the documentation disagrees with itself, and pretending otherwise would be the easy mistake.
Three Wise Help Centre pages, all retrieved 2026-08-11:
- What countries/regions can I send to? lists 49 destinations. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Uruguay are there. Guatemala is not. The page adds a fallback: “You might still be able to send money to your recipient’s country/region if their account is denominated in USD, EUR or GBP.”
- What currencies can I send to and from? does not contain GTQ in either its send-to-and-from list or its send-to-only list.
- Where do I need to live to hold money with Wise? runs alphabetically through Georgia, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Guam and Guernsey. Guatemala is absent.
Against that, Wise publishes a corridor marketing page, Send Money to Guatemala, which says “Send USD, receive GTQ” and “The recipient gets money in GTQ directly from Wise’s local bank account.”
We ran a control before writing this. Wise publishes the same templated corridor page, with the same “Send USD, receive HNL” copy, for Honduras — which is also absent from the Help Centre send-to list — and the equivalent page for Bolivia also returns 200, while pages for Cuba and North Korea return 404. Every Latin American currency Wise actually delivers (CRC, MXN, COP, CLP, ARS, BRL, UYU) has a dedicated “CRC transfers”-style help article named for that currency; there is no GTQ transfers article.
What we established: Wise’s own Help Centre coverage documentation does not list Guatemala or GTQ. What we did not establish: whether the marketing page reflects a live corridor that the Help Centre has not been updated for. We are not resolving that from outside; the live quote screen in the Wise app is the only authority that settles it for your specific transfer.
The thing all six have in common
Every one of these providers that functions inside Guatemala does so through a card network, not through its own app network. The Cash App Card is a Visa debit card; the Venmo Debit Card converts through Mastercard; Revolut issues Visa and Mastercard products. There is no app-to-merchant rail in Guatemala for any of them.
That has a consequence: your real acceptance question is a card acceptance question, and it is answered on our companion page — US cards, Amex and spending dollars in Guatemala, which covers what the law says about paying in quetzales versus dollars, the published rules on dynamic currency conversion and card surcharges, and where cash is genuinely the only option.
If your goal is ATM access rather than app payments, the card-selection question is covered separately in ATM cards that work in Guatemala and the per-bank fee picture in the Guatemala ATM fee comparator.
Edge cases and what is genuinely not published
Travelling with a US account. Venmo’s restriction is written as a restricted activity, not a technical block, and it carves out the debit card. We report the contract term; we do not advise on how any provider enforces it or what to do about it.
Receiving freelance income in Guatemala. PayPal’s tier for Guatemala includes “receive”, and PayPal’s LatAm payouts guidance says payouts arrive in USD. Whether your specific Guatemalan bank will accept a PayPal-originated transfer is not published by PayPal or by any Guatemalan bank we checked on 2026-08-11.
Merchant acceptance counts. None of these six providers publishes a Guatemalan merchant-acceptance figure. Any number you see quoted for “how many places in Guatemala take PayPal” has no published source behind it, and this page will not invent one.
Fees. The only fee figure on this page is Cash App’s 3% international use fee, because Cash App publishes it in the same article as the country coverage. We deliberately publish no other fee — the coverage answer is stable, a fee table is not, and this site has published a rotten fee before.
Opening a local account instead. If the real need is a Guatemalan account that holds USD, that is a banking question, not an app question — see the USD accounts by bank comparison and best bank for USD exchange.

This page reports what each provider publishes about country and currency coverage. It is not financial advice, and coverage tiers can change — for a transfer you are about to make, the quote screen inside the provider’s own app is the authority.
