History, from the Church’s own account
The newsroom’s history of the Church in Guatemala gives these milestones:
- 1942: John F. O’Donnal, a Church member from the United States, moved to Guatemala. After World War II he petitioned Church President George Albert Smith to send missionaries. His wife, Carmen Galvez O’Donnal, became the first Guatemalan to be baptized.
- 1956: missionaries began to study Mayan languages.
- 1962: there were over 10,000 Guatemalan Latter-day Saints, in the cities and the highlands. Members travelled to the Mesa Arizona Temple.
- 1984: the Guatemala City temple was dedicated, Central America’s first, in 11 dedicatory sessions filled to capacity.
