You are in the United States, your niece in Guatemala wants a game or an app, and a gift card from the supermarket checkout looks like the easy answer. Whether that card actually works for her depends on the issuer’s own terms: Apple’s and Google’s terms tie a card to the country where it was bought, and Amazon’s US card terms limit where it can be redeemed. This page sets out what Apple, Google and Amazon say in their own terms and help pages, read on 16 October 2026, so you know before you pay.

Quick summary:

  • Apple: a US Apple gift card links only to a US Apple Account and works only for purchases in the United States, per Apple’s US terms. Apple’s services (App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV app and others) are listed as available in Guatemala, and Apple’s payment list for Guatemala shows most credit and debit cards, with no Apple Account balance line.
  • Google Play: a US Play card is valid only for US residents aged 13+. Google says the Play account country must match the card’s country, and Google’s list of gift-card countries does not include Guatemala.
  • Amazon.com: the card is redeemed on www.amazon.com (and certain affiliated properties), not at Amazon properties outside the US. The terms page sets no residency rule; whether the item ships to Guatemala is a separate check.
  • Scam warning: Amazon’s terms warn about scams that ask for payment by gift card. Never pass a card code to anyone you do not know.

This page is not legal advice. If a card balance or a dispute matters to you, confirm your own case directly with the card issuer’s customer care, or with an attorney.

Apple: a US card needs a US Apple Account

Apple’s US gift card terms (last updated 14 October 2024) are direct. Apple says: “Gift Cards purchased in the United States and content codes can only be linked to an Account in the United States and can only be used for purchases in the United States”. The same terms add that “The United States includes its territories and possessions” and that “Use of Gift Cards or content codes to purchase Content in the United States requires an Account in the United States”.

The Guatemala angle. Apple’s services are available in Guatemala. Apple’s page on Media Services availability by country (published 30 September 2026) lists Guatemala with services that include the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Arcade and the Apple TV app. So the question is not whether your relative can use the App Store. It is how they pay for it.

Apple’s support page on payment methods by country (published 7 August 2026) lists, under Guatemala, “Most credit and debit cards”. For contrast, Mexico’s entry on the same page includes Apple Account balance, “from redeeming App Store Card or adding funds”. The Guatemala entry has no such line. That is what the list shows; the Apple pages we read do not say either way whether Apple Gift Cards are sold in Guatemala.

Google Play: the account country has to match the card

Google’s US Play gift card terms say the cards “are valid only for users who are 13 years of age or older, and who are residents of the USA”. Google’s help article on gift cards adds three rules:

  • “Play gift cards and Play balance are subject to the Terms of Service applicable in the country where issued”
  • “Play gift cards may only be redeemed and used in the country and currency in which they were purchased”
  • “The country or region listed in your Google Play account must match the country or region where the gift card, recharge code, or promotional code is offered”

The Guatemala angle. The same help article carries a table of Countries where Google Play gift cards are available. On 16 October 2026 it listed, among others, Brazil, Canada, Colombia and Mexico. Guatemala does not appear anywhere on that page.

Can your relative just switch to the US store? Google’s help page on changing the Play country sets the conditions: “To set up a new country or region, you must be in that location and have a payment method from the new country or region”. It also says “After you initially set your Google Play country, you must wait at least 90 days before you can change it”. On balances, Google says “Your Google Play balance is linked to your Google Play country”, and adds: “When you change your country or region, you can’t use the Google Play balance from your old country or region in your new country or region”. Under these rules, a person living in Guatemala does not meet the condition of being in the US.

For questions about a US card, Google’s US card terms give a customer care number: 1-855-466-4438.

Amazon.com: redeemed on amazon.com, not outside the US

Amazon’s gift card terms (last updated 7 March 2025) say: “Gift Cards may only be redeemed toward the purchase of eligible goods and services provided by Amazon.com Services LLC and its affiliates”. The same sentence names where: on www.amazon.com, “or certain of its affiliated properties, such as smile.amazon.com”. The terms add that “Neither your Amazon.com Balance nor your Gift Cards may be applied to the purchase of goods or services at any Amazon-affiliated property outside of the United States”.

The terms say where the card is spent, not who spends it: the terms page does not list a rule on where the account holder lives. A separate check is whether the item they pick ships to Guatemala, and what it costs to get there. That is covered in our guide Does Amazon ship to Guatemala?.

On cost to you, Amazon’s terms say “No fees apply to Gift Cards” and that “The portion of your Amazon.com Balance made up of Gift Cards issued after October 1, 2005 does not expire”.

Steps: before you buy a gift card for family in Guatemala

  1. Ask which store they actually use. Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon.com each follow different rules, set out above.
  2. Ask which country their account is set to. For Apple and Google Play, the account country is one of the rules. Apple’s US terms require a US Apple Account. Google requires the Play account country to match the card’s country, and Google’s US card terms also limit the cards to residents of the USA aged 13 or older.
  3. For Google Play, do not plan on a country switch. Google says a switch requires being in the new country with a local payment method, and a 90-day wait after the first setting.
  4. For Amazon.com, check the item first. Whether a given item ships to Guatemala is a separate question from the card’s terms. Read the Amazon shipping guide before you buy the card.
  5. Send the code only to the relative, directly. Amazon’s terms warn: “There are a variety of Gift Card scams that request payment by Gift Card”. If anyone asks your family to pay them with gift cards, treat it as a warning sign and do not send the code.
  6. If the card will not work, look at other ways to help. See our guide to sending groceries, food and essentials to family in Guatemala.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my family in Guatemala use an Apple gift card I bought in the US?

Only with a US Apple Account. Apple’s US gift card terms (last updated 14 October 2024) say cards bought in the United States can only be linked to an Account in the United States and can only be used for purchases in the United States, which Apple says includes its territories and possessions. A relative whose Apple Account is set to Guatemala cannot link a US card to that account under these terms.

Does Guatemala have the App Store and Apple gift cards?

Apple’s page on Media Services availability (published 30 September 2026) lists Guatemala, with services including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Arcade and the Apple TV app. On payment, Apple’s payment-methods page (published 7 August 2026) lists most credit and debit cards under Guatemala, and the Guatemala entry has no Apple Account balance line. Mexico’s entry on the same page includes Apple Account balance from redeeming an App Store Card. The Apple pages we read do not say either way whether Apple Gift Cards are sold in Guatemala.

Will a US Google Play gift card work in Guatemala?

Not under Google’s terms for an account set to Guatemala. Google’s US card terms say the cards are valid only for users aged 13 or older who are residents of the USA. Google’s help page says Play gift cards may only be redeemed and used in the country and currency in which they were bought, and that the country in the Google Play account must match the country where the card is offered. Google’s list of countries where Play gift cards are available (checked 16 October 2026) names Brazil, Canada, Colombia and Mexico, but not Guatemala.

Can my relative in Guatemala switch their Google Play country to the US?

Google’s rules for changing the Play country say you must be in the new country or region and have a payment method from it, and that after first setting your Play country you must wait at least 90 days before changing it. Google also says that after a change of country, the Play balance from the old country cannot be used in the new country. Someone living in Guatemala does not meet the ‘be in that location’ condition for the US.

Can someone in Guatemala use an Amazon.com gift card?

Amazon’s gift card terms (last updated 7 March 2025) say the card is redeemed toward eligible goods and services on www.amazon.com or certain affiliated properties, and cannot be applied at any Amazon-affiliated property outside the United States. The terms say where the card is spent, not who spends it: the terms page does not list a residency rule. Whether the item your relative chooses ships to Guatemala is a separate question, covered in our Amazon shipping guide.

Do Amazon and Google Play gift cards expire or charge fees?

Amazon’s terms say no fees apply to its gift cards, and that the part of an Amazon.com Balance made up of gift cards issued after 1 October 2005 does not expire. Google’s US Play card terms say no fees or expiration dates apply to the card or credit.

Someone asked my family to pay them with gift cards. Is that a scam?

Treat it as one. Amazon’s gift card terms warn that there are a variety of gift card scams that request payment by gift card. Never read a card’s code to someone over the phone or send a photo of it to anyone other than the relative you bought it for.
