Who runs what inside
Fundación Paiz (31 August 2023) describes the building floor by floor: a theatre on the first floor, where artists, producers, organisations and foundations stage their shows; a second-floor auditorium run by the Centro Cultural de España en Guatemala for screenings, talks and debates; and, on the upper floors, the Centro Cultural de España’s library and exhibition rooms. Prensa Libre names Patricia Rosenberg as the theatre’s general director. Diario de Centro América reports that 54,000 people pass through its doors each year.
From cinema-theatre to five screens and back
- 1936. Opened in March 1936 with the Mexican film Allá en el rancho grande (Fundación Paiz). It was designed by the German architects Roberto Hoeff and Rodolfo Bader (Fundación Paiz; Diario de Centro América). Rosenberg told Prensa Libre that the Engel family built it and that Cementos Novella, in charge of the works, imported a special machine to produce enough cement.
- Stage years. It worked as both cinema and theatre. Fundación Paiz lists Miguel Ángel Asturias’ Kukulkán, the Mexican artist Jorge Negrete and plays by Guatemalan playwrights Carlos Solórzano and Hugo Carrillo among the productions it hosted; Prensa Libre and Diario de Centro América both record that the University of San Carlos’ Huelga de Dolores held its veladas there.
- 1980s. It became a cinema only; the first and second balconies were covered over to create five screens (Prensa Libre).
- 2012-2013. Rosenberg, in Prensa Libre: “Nosotros teníamos alquilado el teatro para la exhibición de cine y posteriormente retomamos el espacio en 2012 para remozarlo dentro de este nuevo proyecto urbano y reabrirlo como teatro” (roughly: we had the theatre rented for showing films, and later took the space back in 2012 to refurbish it within this new urban project and reopen it as a theatre). Fundación Paiz (31 August 2023) says the architect Alejandro Paz carried out the 2012 remodel in six months. Diario de Centro América dates the change a year later: “La gran transformación llegó en 2013”, when the building reopened as the home of what is now the Centro Cultural de España en Guatemala. The two dates may describe the start of the works and the reopening; neither source says.
- Since then. Musicals produced with Saravandah, among them Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Moulin Rouge and Grease (Rosenberg, in Prensa Libre).
- 2026. The 90th anniversary was celebrated in April with a concert by Daniel Cano and a 30-piece symphonic orchestra playing Frank Sinatra (Prensa Libre).
Rosenberg also told Prensa Libre the building holds the highest heritage category, type A, which she said means neither its use nor many aspects of the space can be modified.
