Banco Industrial and BAC Credomatic are the strongest choices for business banking in Guatemala — solid online platforms, low ACH costs, and dedicated corporate relationship managers. Banrural wins for low fees and rural payroll dispersion. BAM is preferred by tech-forward startups. Monthly fees Q50-Q500 (often waived above Q10K-Q50K balance). API access available only at BI, BAM, and Banrural for high-volume fintechs.
Opening a business account in Guatemala is harder than opening a personal account — but it’s also where the bank you choose matters most. The wrong choice can mean Q5,000-Q15,000 per year in extra fees, slow ACH processing that delays supplier payments, or an online banking platform that breaks every time you upload a payroll file.
This page compares 8 bancos comparados in Guatemala on the metrics that matter for a business account: opening minimums, monthly fees, ACH transfer cost, international wire cost, online banking quality, and API access for fintechs. All figures are referential — Guatemalan bank fees vary by industry, transaction volume, and negotiated terms. Always verify with the bank directly.

How Business Banking Works in Guatemala
Guatemala recognizes several legal entity types, each with different banking requirements:
- Sociedad Anónima (SA) — most common for businesses with multiple shareholders. Q5,000 minimum capital. Requires Patente de Sociedad.
- Sociedad de Responsabilidad Limitada (SRL) — similar to LLC. Q5,000 minimum capital.
- Sociedad Emergente — newer 2022 structure. Q0 minimum capital, no notary required for formation. Best for small ventures or freelancers formalizing.
- Empresa Individual (sole proprietor) — single owner with Patente de Comercio. Personal liability.
All entity types can open business accounts. The bank requires:
- Patente de Comercio + Patente de Sociedad (if SA/SRL)
- Active SAT NIT and RTU registration
- Articles of incorporation (escritura de constitución)
- Board resolution (acta) authorizing the account and naming signatories
- Legal representative’s DPI or passport
- Proof of business address (utility bill or lease in company name)

Cómo Elegir / How to Choose Your Business Bank
Pick based on your business profile:
Transaction volume. A business doing 200+ ACH transfers per month should negotiate volume pricing — every bank offers it but you have to ask. BI and BAC offer the best volume tiers; Banrural matches them for high-volume rural payroll.
Industry. Exporters (textile, agriculture, coffee) often prefer Banrural for the low incoming wire fees. Tech and services prefer BI or BAM for the digital banking. Retail with multiple cashiers prefers BAC for the POS terminal integration.
Cash deposits and withdrawals. Cash-heavy businesses (restaurants, retail, transportation) need branch density. Banrural’s 3,500+ branches dominate. BI’s 1,600+ are concentrated in major cities. Choose based on where your operations are.
Online banking quality. BI’s “Bi en Línea Empresarial” and BAC’s online platform are the strongest for multi-user permissions, approval workflows, and real-time reporting. BAM’s platform is clean and modern. The others (G&T, Promerica, Bantrab, BI Banco) are functional but feel dated.
API access. If you’re a fintech, payment processor, or high-volume e-commerce operator, only BI, BAM, and Banrural have meaningful API tiers. BAC has Open Banking pilots. The others require manual file uploads (CSV/XML), which won’t scale beyond a few hundred transactions per day.
Fee tolerance. Bantrab and Banrural have the lowest monthly fees but weakest digital tools. BAC has the highest fees but the best service. Pick based on what costs more — fees or your time.
For Diaspora: Opening a Business Account from Abroad
If you’re a Guatemalan in the US (or anywhere abroad) wanting to start or buy into a Guatemalan business, you can do most of it remotely with a power of attorney:
- Form the entity remotely. A Guatemalan attorney can file the Sociedad Emergente, SRL, or SA on your behalf with a notarized and apostilled power of attorney. Cost: $300-$1,500 USD depending on complexity.
- Register the NIT and Patente. Same attorney handles SAT registration and Registro Mercantil filings.
- Open the bank account. This step usually requires the legal representative (you or your designated rep) to appear in person at least once. Some banks (BI, BAM) accept video-verified onboarding for established businesses; most still require physical presence.
- Set up online banking. Once the account is open, you can manage everything remotely.
Power of attorney from the US: notarize at any Guatemalan consulate, apostille from your state Secretary of State. Plan 2-4 weeks for the document chain. The Guatemalan consulate in your city can sometimes notarize banking-specific documents directly.
For Fintechs and High-Volume Operators
If your business processes payments, payroll dispersions, or P2P transfers at scale, the API and integration story matters more than fee cards:
- Banco Industrial has the most mature corporate API for ACH dispersion, transaction inquiry, and account balances. Requires a Q500K+ monthly transaction volume commitment and a 3-6 month certification process.
- BAM offers fintech-tier API access through their Bancolombia parent’s platform. Best for cross-border fintechs that need both Guatemala and Colombia integration.
- Banrural offers API for rural payroll dispersion at scale (NGOs, agricultural co-ops, microfinance) — they handle volume the others can’t match.
- BAC Credomatic has Open Banking pilots running but no public production API as of May 2026.
For most early-stage fintechs, file-based dispersion (CSV upload via online banking) is sufficient up to ~10,000 transactions per month. Above that, push for API access.
Trámites Relacionados / Required Steps Before Opening
Before walking into any bank to open a business account, complete these prerequisites:
- NIT (Tax ID Number) — required for the company. Free at any SAT office.
- SAT RTU registration — confirms the company’s tax registration is current and active.
- CUI/NIT consulta — verify the legal representative’s NIT is active before the bank meeting.

Data Integrity Notes
All fee figures in this comparison are referential and based on bank-published business fee schedules as of May 2026. Banks negotiate aggressively with mid-size and large businesses — actual fees you’ll pay depend on industry, transaction volume, account history, and your relationship manager’s discretion. The numbers above represent published rack rates for small-to-mid-size businesses (Q50K-Q500K monthly transaction volume).
API access tiers and certification requirements change frequently as Guatemalan banks build out fintech infrastructure. If API integration is critical to your business, request a current capabilities document directly from the bank’s corporate banking team.
