Antigua Guatemala’s free walking tours are tip-based tours that you book, free of charge, on GuruWalk, and each guide sets their own start time and meeting point; there is no single departure from Parque Central. On 9 October 2026 GuruWalk listed 13 free tours in Antigua Guatemala, rated 4.80 out of 5 across 4,419 reviews, and the ten shown on its listing page lasted from 1 hour 15 minutes to 3 hours; nine listed start times between 09:00 and 15:00, and the tenth (Alfredo’s) listed 09:00, 11:30 and one more time not shown.

This page compares those tours guide by guide: when each one starts, where its guide waits, how many people it needs to run, and how you pay. For a paid private guide instead, see our tour guide prices; for everything else in town, things to do in Antigua.

How a GuruWalk tour works

Booking is free, and so is cancelling. At the end, each person pays the guide what they think the tour was worth; Alfredo’s page puts it as some walkers giving €10 per person and others $50. Three practical rules come from the tour pages themselves:

  1. Book first. Joel’s Go Antigua page says the tour runs only with a prior reservation, and warns: “do not expect a Guru to be at the meeting point if you have not made your reservation”. Alfredo’s page says registering in advance is mandatory.
  2. Cancel if you can’t make it. Each of the six tour pages read on 9 October 2026 carries the same line: cancel the reservation, otherwise the guide will be waiting for you.
  3. Check the minimum. Alfredo’s and Joel’s tours need at least 5 people to run, Pablo’s city tour 5 and Victor Antonio’s 4. Harold’s city tour and Pablo’s village tour need no minimum.

How to spot your guide. The pages describe it: Joel wears a white t-shirt and carries his tourist guide identification outside the Choco Museo, a large yellow house; Harold holds a red sign that says GuruWalk; Victor Antonio wears a hat and sunglasses; Pablo, at La Merced, wears a cap, a jade necklace and his guide licence.

City-centre route or the villages?

City centre. Joel’s Go Antigua itinerary covers Parque Central, the Santa Catalina Arch and La Merced, with Santo Domingo, Tanque La Unión, the central market, Cerro de la Cruz, a jade factory and museum and the craft market among the other sites it may include. Alfredo’s tour starts at Central Park and visits the Palace of the Captains General. Harold’s page says his tour takes in roofs and terraces with views of the three volcanoes.

The villages. Pablo’s craft tour visits San Juan del Obispo and San Pedro Las Huertas, with a chocolate and wine workshop in San Juan del Obispo. His page asks walkers to tip the artisans at both stops as well, says each place has a shop for wine and cacao, and stresses that his 1:15 pm tour is independent of other guides’ tours. GuruWalk’s Antigua page describes the village routes as travelling by chicken bus and says reviewers note they can run up to four hours.

How much to tip

GuruWalk publishes two different guides, so here are both:

Where on GuruWalkSuggested amount
Antigua Guatemala listing page, FAQ10 to 20 USD per person (roughly Q80 to Q150); some walkers leave up to 50 USD
Individual tour pages (all six read)€15 to €50 per participant

Joel’s own description goes further: it says his tour is not a free tour as the website announces, that every contribution is per person, and that the minimum according to GuruWalk is €15 to €50. Read the description of the tour you book before you go, and carry cash for the cash-only guides.

Before you go

Five of the six tours with full details are marked not suitable for people with reduced mobility; Victor Antonio’s is the exception. Nine of the ten tours above have a 09:00 or 09:30 start, which leaves the afternoon open for a chocolate workshop or a cooking class; the full list is in our activities index.

Where to stay

The city-tour meeting points in the tables are all in central Antigua: Parque Central, 4a Calle Poniente, 5a Avenida Norte and La Merced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free walking tour in Antigua Guatemala?

Yes. GuruWalk listed 13 free tours in Antigua Guatemala when its page was read on 9 October 2026. Booking is free; at the end each person pays the guide what they think is fair. They are run by individual guides, each with their own route, start times and meeting point, not by one company from one spot.

Where does the Antigua free walking tour start, and at what time?

It depends on the guide. On 9 October 2026, nine of the ten tours shown on GuruWalk’s Antigua page listed start times between 09:00 and 15:00; Alfredo’s listed 09:00, 11:30 and one more time not shown. Meeting points on the tour pages included the Choco Museo on 4a Calle Poniente opposite Parque Central, the Mermaid Fountain (Fuente de las Sirenas) in Parque Central, 5a Avenida Norte, the stone fountain in front of Iglesia de La Merced, and the McDonald’s on Poniente 21 for a village tour. Check the time and meeting point on the page of the tour you book.

Do I need to book the free walking tour in Antigua?

Yes. The Go Antigua tour page tells walkers not to expect the guide at the meeting point without a reservation, and the Free tour of Antigua Guatemala page says registering in advance is mandatory. Several tours also need a minimum of 4 or 5 people to run, and every tour page asks you to cancel if you cannot go, because the guide will otherwise wait for you.

How much should I tip on a free walking tour in Antigua?

GuruWalk gives two different guides on its own pages. Its Antigua listing page (read 9 October 2026) says 10 to 20 USD per person, roughly 80 to 150 quetzales, and that some walkers leave up to 50 USD. Its tour pages say GuruWalk recommends 15 to 50 euros per participant. Four of the tours are cash only (Pablo’s city tour per the guide’s own description), so carry quetzales or dollars.

How long is the Antigua free walking tour?

The ten tours shown on GuruWalk on 9 October 2026 ran from 1 hour 15 minutes to 3 hours. GuruWalk’s FAQ puts city-centre routes at around an hour and a half to two hours, and David’s city tour is listed at 1 hour 15 minutes; the village tour by chicken bus was listed at 2 hours 30 minutes and the Mayan villages and cacao tour at 3 hours.
