What is the theory driving exam

The theory exam is the first official evaluation that every first-time license applicant in Guatemala must pass. It verifies that the applicant knows:

  • Road signage (warning, regulatory, informational, transit)
  • Transit laws (speed limits, right of way, breathalyzer, fines)
  • Defensive driving (safe distances, overtaking, anticipation)
  • Basic mechanics (lights, brakes, tires, fluid levels)
  • Basic first aid (what to do in an accident)

It is independent of the practical driving exam, which evaluates your physical ability to drive a vehicle on track or street. Typical order: pass theory → practice driving → pass practical → receive license.

Who must take it

You DO need to take the theory exam:

  • First-license applicants (any category)
  • People whose previous license expired more than 3 years ago (must obtain it as first-time)
  • People who never had a license in any country
  • People who failed the practical after 3 attempts (sometimes theory retake is required)

You DON’T need theory exam:

Pre-exam requirements

  • Valid DPI (of legal age: 16 years for Type C, 18 for others)
  • First license payment Q400 (includes theory exam)
  • Prior registration in online or in-person system
  • Valid eye exam (Q50, not strictly required for theory but yes for final license)
  • Criminal background certificate (not required for all cases but some centers ask for it)

Step-by-step theory exam

  1. Study the official manual — Download the free driver’s manual PDF from the Departamento de Transito site. About 80 pages with all signs and laws you need to know.

  2. Practice with simulators — Use the online simulator at the same site or official mobile apps. Repeat practice exams until consistently scoring 90%+.

  3. Register online — Create account at transito.gob.gt with your DPI. Pay Q400 (complete first license) at bank. Upload receipt.

  4. Reserve online exam appointment — System gives you time slot options. Book one where you have 30 minutes uninterrupted.

  5. Take the exam — Connect to portal at reserved time. The 40 questions appear. You have 30 minutes. Mark your answer and advance. You can return to previous questions before submitting.

  6. Receive immediate result — System shows you instantly: passed or failed, with numerical grade. If passed, you can schedule practical exam.

In-person modality

  1. Study the same as online — Official manual is the same.

  2. Pay Q400 at bank and go to authorized center (Departamento de Transito in Zone 11, Maycom Mixco, or others).

  3. Present DPI and receipt — They assign you a turn for theory exam.

  4. Take in-person exam — In exam room, they hand you sheet with 40 questions. 30 minutes. Mark answers.

  5. Wait for result — They give you result same day (15-30 minutes after submitting).

Exam question types

The 40 questions are distributed approximately:

  • 15 on road signage (warning, regulatory, informational, road markings)
  • 10 on transit laws (speeds, right of way, alcohol, fines)
  • 8 on defensive driving and safety (distances, overtaking, adverse conditions)
  • 4 on basic mechanics (lights, tires, fluids, brakes)
  • 3 on first aid and accidents (what to do if you witness an accident)

Common mistakes and tips

  • Studying only YouTube videos — videos are useful but the official manual has the exact information the exam evaluates. Combine them.

  • Not practicing simulators — the question format and time (30 min for 40 questions = 45 seconds per question) requires practice. Without simulators, many run out of time.

  • Trusting “tricks” or internet answers — some sites sell “leaked exams” that are often fake or outdated. Study the official material.

  • Not reviewing before submitting — before clicking “Submit,” review your answers. You have time to change ones you doubt.

  • Confusing warning signs with regulatory — warning are triangular with red border (upcoming danger). Regulatory are circular with red border (prohibition or obligation). Learn this distinction.

  • Forgetting new 2024-2026 regulations — the manual updates every 1-2 years. Study the most recent version, not borrowed old manuals.

  • Guatemala 2026 Driver’s Manual (PDF at transito.gob.gt/primera-licencia)
  • Official exam simulator (same site)

Unofficial but useful:

  • Online courses from authorized academies (Q200-Q500, not mandatory)

After passing the theory

Once you pass the theory exam, your next step is:

  1. Practice driving — if you’ve never driven, hire instructor or practice with family/friend on private property. Many people enroll in driving school (Q500-Q1500 per course).

  2. Pass eye exam if you haven’t done it.

  3. Take practical driving exam — the actual driving skill.

  4. Pick up your driver’s license — default category Type C.
