In short: Guatemala runs 120 V at 60 Hz on type A and B sockets (IEC World Plugs, retrieved 2026-08-11) — the same combination as the United States and Canada. That makes this question have opposite answers depending on your passport. An American or Canadian needs nothing. A Briton, Irish, Australian, New Zealand or continental European traveller needs a plug adapter for everything, and a voltage converter only for the specific devices whose own rating plate says they cannot take 120 V. Almost nobody needs a converter for everything they packed, and almost nobody needs zero adapters — the split runs device by device, and the device is the authority.

Two rows deserve a second look. China is a mixed case: the IEC lists both type A and type I for China, and only the type A half of that pair fits a Guatemalan socket. Peru is the row that catches people out — the plug fits perfectly at 220 V-designed devices, which is exactly the situation where a plug that fits tells you nothing about whether the device will survive.
The device is the authority, not this page
There is no rule of the form “laptops are fine, hairdryers are not.” Two chargers in the same bag can differ. The only instrument that settles it for your device is the rating plate on that device or its power supply — the block of small print on the charger brick, or the label on the underside of an appliance.
That plate states the input voltage range and frequency range the unit accepts. Compare it against Guatemala’s published figures:
- Guatemala’s voltage: 120 V (IEC World Plugs, retrieved 2026-08-11).
- Guatemala’s frequency: 60 Hz — defined by the regulator as “la frecuencia nominal del Sistema Eléctrico Nacional, con un valor de 60 Hertz” (CNEE, Normas Técnicas del Servicio de Distribución, definitions).
If 120 V and 60 Hz both fall inside the ranges printed on your device, that device does not need a voltage converter — it only needs its plug to physically fit. If either falls outside, that device is the one to think about. The IEC itself flags the stakes plainly, in its note on Brazil — the one country in its list that runs two different mains voltages: “it is therefore important to find out the local voltage before plugging in your appliance (note: wrong voltage can destroy your appliance).”
Devices built to accept a wide range are commonly described as dual-voltage; the IEC uses the same term. This page deliberately does not claim that all phone chargers, laptop bricks or camera chargers are dual-voltage — that is a universal claim about products no one has counted, and the counter-examples are exactly the expensive ones. Adapter and converter are not the same object

Because a plug adapter changes nothing electrical, an adapter alone on a 230 V-only appliance still delivers 120 V to a device that expects 230 V. What that does to any one device is not something the sources behind this page publish. The IEC’s warning goes no further than “wrong voltage can destroy your appliance”, and it does not distinguish between too much voltage and too little; no rule about which direction of mismatch is the survivable one is stated in any instrument cited here. So treat a mismatch in either direction as a mismatch, and decide from the rating plate rather than from a rule of thumb.
The IEC’s plug-type notes carry a few details worth knowing before you buy an adapter:
- Type A is “an ungrounded plug with two flat parallel pins.”
- Type B is “two flat parallel pins and a round grounding (or earth) pin. The earth pin is longer than the other two so that the device is grounded before the power is connected,” rated at 15 amps.
- Type C (the European “Europlug”) is “generally limited for use in appliances that require 2.5 amps or less” — so a C-to-A adapter is not a licence to run a high-draw appliance through it.
- Type G (UK/Ireland) “has an incorporated fuse (usually a 3 amps fuse for smaller appliances such as a computer and a 13 amps one for heavy duty appliances such as heaters).” A type G plug pushed into a passive adapter keeps its own fuse; the adapter adds no protection of its own.
What the Guatemalan grid is actually specified to deliver
This is the part travel checklists skip, and it is the part that decides whether you want surge protection for a long stay rather than a two-week trip.
Nominal voltage. On the distribution side, the connection standard that Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala, S.A. (EEGSA) publishes through the regulator CNEE lists the low-voltage supply it provides as 120/240 volts, single phase, three wire and 120/208 volts, single phase, three wire, along with three-phase variants and 240/480 V. The same standard defines low-voltage service as supply at or below 1,000 volts. Note the scope precisely: that document is EEGSA’s standard and covers EEGSA’s service territory — principally Guatemala City and its surrounding municipalities — not the whole country. The country-level figure of 120 V comes from the IEC entry, not from EEGSA.
Frequency. 60 Hz nationally, per CNEE’s definition above, which is stated for the Sistema Eléctrico Nacional as a whole.
How far the voltage is allowed to wander. CNEE’s Normas Técnicas del Servicio de Distribución, Article 24, sets the permitted percentage deviation from nominal voltage at the delivery point. For low voltage — the category your wall socket sits in — the standing-regime tolerances (from month 13 onward) are:

And the compliance test is looser than the band suggests. Article 24 states that electricity is considered poor quality “cuando, en un lapso de tiempo mayor al cinco por ciento del correspondiente al total del Período de Medición, las mediciones muestran que la Regulación de Tensión ha excedido el rango de tolerancias establecidas” — that is, the voltage may sit outside the tolerance band for up to five percent of the measurement period and the service still passes.
That is the sourced version of the folk wisdom that Guatemalan voltage “moves.” It is not an accusation against any distributor; it is what the standard permits, and rural service is permitted a wider band than urban. What is not published
Grounded outlets in Guatemalan buildings. No published figure was found for what share of Guatemalan dwellings have grounded (type B) sockets as of 2026-08-11. The instrument that would carry a distribution-side answer — the EEGSA connection standard published by CNEE — governs the service drop, its maximum 40-metre length, the meter box and the supply voltages, and does not address the grounding of interior sockets. CNEE’s distribution-service standards likewise regulate the quality of what the distributor delivers to the delivery point, not the wiring on the customer’s side of it. Anything you read asserting a national percentage of ungrounded outlets in Guatemala is not coming from either of those documents.
What can be said from a source: the IEC defines type A as ungrounded and type B as the grounded version of the same plug, and Guatemala is listed as using both. A socket that physically accepts only the two flat pins has nowhere for a type B earth pin to go — which is a statement about plug geometry, not a claim about how common that is in Guatemalan housing.
