Yes. MSPAS declared a national red alert. As of May 7, 2026 there are 5,821 confirmed cases and 7 deaths. Highest concentration is in central Guatemala. 604,638 doses of MMR/MR vaccine have been administered. This is Guatemala's largest measles outbreak in decades and remains active.

Should I postpone travel to Guatemala because of measles?

Accepted Answer

If you're fully vaccinated against measles (MMR), you're 97% protected — travel is generally safe with normal precautions. The CDC and ALMA recommend confirming you've had 2 MMR doses before traveling to Guatemala in 2026. If you're not vaccinated or unsure, get an MMR booster at least 15 days before your trip. Pregnant women, immunocompromised travelers, and infants under 6 months should consult their doctor.

What are the symptoms of measles?

Begins like a strong flu: high fever (over 38.5°C / 101°F), dry cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes. Small white spots inside the cheeks (Koplik spots) appear 1-2 days before the rash — characteristic sign. After 3-5 days, red rash appears starting on the face and spreading downward. Where can I get vaccinated against measles in Guatemala?

The MMR vaccine (sarampión, paperas, rubéola = measles, mumps, rubella) and MR vaccine (measles, rubella) are completely free at any public MSPAS health center. No appointment needed, just bring your DPI or passport. Find your nearest center at establecimientosdesalud.mspas.gob.gt — look for Puesto de Salud, Centro de Salud, CAP, or Hospital. Available for all ages during the outbreak.

Who should get vaccinated during the outbreak?

MSPAS recommends vaccination for: (1) children 6 months to 5 years (full schedule), (2) people 6 to 39 years without complete vaccination history, (3) healthcare workers, (4) travelers to areas with active cases. If you were vaccinated in the 1970s-80s, you may need a booster. Pregnant women should NOT get the MMR vaccine — vaccinate before pregnancy or after delivery.

1) ISOLATE at home — avoid contact with others (especially children and pregnant women). 2) Do NOT go to a health center without calling first — call 2444-7474 or WhatsApp ALMA at 2339-9810. 3) Stay hydrated, take acetaminophen for fever (NOT aspirin). 4) Go to emergency immediately if you have: difficulty breathing, fever that doesn't respond to acetaminophen, severe dehydration, or seizures. 5) Report your case so MSPAS can do contact tracing.

Is measles dangerous for adults?

Accepted Answer

Yes, measles can be more severe in unvaccinated adults than in children. Complications include pneumonia, encephalitis (brain inflammation), severe diarrhea with dehydration, ear infections. Adult fatality rate without medical care can be 1-3%. If you're over 30 and unsure if you were vaccinated as a child, get vaccinated now — vaccine risk is far lower than measles risk.

Does the measles vaccine cause autism?

Accepted Answer

No. This is misinformation circulating since 1998 based on a fraudulent study that was retracted, and whose author lost his medical license. Over 40 scientific studies in millions of children have shown NO link between MMR vaccine and autism. The vaccine is safe, effective (97% after 2 doses), and the only way to stop the current outbreak in Guatemala.
