The Quick Answer

There are no direct flights from Dublin to Guatemala City. The cheapest and fastest one-stop route is almost always Dublin to Madrid to Guatemala City on the Aer Lingus + Iberia codeshare at around EUR 600-900 economy return. Plan on 14-20 hours of total travel time.

If your dates are flexible and you book 3-4 months ahead, sub-EUR 700 returns appear regularly outside peak seasons.

The Realistic Route Options From Dublin

Option 1: DUB to Madrid (MAD) to GUA — Aer Lingus + Iberia

  • Operators: Aer Lingus (DUB-MAD), Iberia (MAD-GUA). Codeshare under either airline.
  • Total journey: Roughly 14-16 hours (3hr DUB-MAD + 2-3hr Madrid layover + 11hr MAD-GUA).
  • Typical price: EUR 600-900 economy return; EUR 1,800-3,000 business class.
  • Why it wins: Usually cheapest and fastest. No ESTA needed. Single ticket means baggage routes through and Aer Lingus is liable for missed connections. Iberia uses the A330-200 on Madrid-Guatemala, decent seat pitch in economy.
  • Watch out: Madrid Terminal 4S handles long-haul, Terminal 4 handles short-haul. You will transfer between sub-terminals — leave at least 90 minutes (60 minutes is the minimum legal connection time but build a buffer).

Option 2: DUB to Amsterdam (AMS) to Mexico City to GUA — KLM + Aeromexico

  • Operators: KLM (DUB-AMS-MEX), Aeromexico (MEX-GUA).
  • Total journey: Roughly 18-20 hours with two stops.
  • Typical price: EUR 700-1,100 economy return.
  • Why consider it: Useful only if Madrid routes are full or sharply priced on your dates. Some Flying Blue mileage benefits.
  • Watch out: Two stops adds risk of delay and significantly longer total time. Mexico City layover can be 2-5 hours.

Option 3: DUB to Boston (BOS) or JFK to GUA — Aer Lingus + Delta/American

  • Operators: Aer Lingus (DUB-BOS or DUB-JFK), Delta or American (BOS/JFK-GUA).
  • Total journey: Roughly 16-18 hours via Boston, 17-19 hours via JFK.
  • Typical price: EUR 650-950 economy return.
  • Why consider it: Useful if you already have ESTA, want to combine the trip with a US stopover (Aer Lingus DUB-BOS pre-clears US immigration in Dublin — handy), or want to earn miles on Delta SkyMiles / American AAdvantage.
  • Watch out: ESTA required (USD 21, 2-year validity). Boston and JFK both require clearing US immigration even when transiting — Dublin US pre-clearance speeds this up significantly. Allow 90 minutes minimum for connections at Boston, 2 hours at JFK.

Option 4: DUB to London to Madrid to GUA — positioning route

  • Operators: Ryanair or Aer Lingus to London, then BA/Iberia to Madrid, then Iberia to GUA.
  • Total journey: Roughly 17-22 hours depending on layovers.
  • Typical price: EUR 550-850 sometimes — can be EUR 100-200 cheaper than direct DUB-MAD-GUA.
  • Why consider it: Budget-constrained travellers, or you are visiting family in London anyway.
  • Watch out: Two separate tickets means you handle baggage between Ryanair and the long-haul. No through-protection if the first leg is delayed. Build at least 4-5 hours buffer at London (LGW or STN to LHR transfer adds 90 minutes).

Prices fluctuate weekly. Compare across at least three engines — Skyscanner, Google Flights, Aviasales — before booking. Each surfaces airline inventory slightly differently and partner deals appear on one but not another.

When To Book

  • Sweet spot: 3-4 months ahead of travel. Earlier is fine but prices rarely drop further; closer than 6 weeks you start paying a peak fare.
  • Cheapest months: May, September, October, early November.
  • Avoid at all costs: Mid-December to early January (Christmas/New Year peak), the two weeks around Holy Week (Semana Santa in Guatemala, peak family travel), June-August (Madrid summer heat means delays plus peak EU holiday demand).
  • Day of week: Tuesday and Wednesday departures save EUR 50-150 over Friday/Saturday.

Aer Lingus Baggage Rules

  • Economy long-haul: 1 x 23kg checked + 1 x 10kg cabin (max 55x40x24cm) + 1 small personal item.
  • Premium economy: 2 x 23kg checked + 1 x 10kg cabin + personal item.
  • Business: 2 x 32kg checked + 1 x cabin + personal item.
  • Excess bag fees: EUR 70-100 per extra bag on long-haul. Online ahead is cheaper than at the airport.

When ticketed as a single Aer Lingus codeshare with Iberia on the MAD-GUA leg, the Aer Lingus baggage rules apply throughout. If you book two separate tickets (Ryanair + Iberia for example), each airline’s rules apply on its segment — and Ryanair’s bag policy is famously strict.

ESTA for US Connections

If you route via Boston or JFK, you need an ESTA — even though you never officially enter the USA. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov (the only official site — avoid the EUR 50+ third-party “ESTA service” websites that charge a markup for the same online form). USD 21, valid for 2 years and unlimited entries.

Apply at least 72 hours before travel. Most approvals come within minutes but build a buffer.

The Madrid (Iberia) and Amsterdam (KLM) routes avoid this entirely.

Layover Tips

  • Madrid (MAD): Allow 2-3 hours. Long-haul leaves Terminal 4S; DUB-MAD arrives Terminal 4. The shuttle between sub-terminals is fast but security/passport queues can take 30-45 minutes at peak.
  • Amsterdam (AMS) Schiphol: Allow 90 minutes minimum. Schiphol is efficient and connections are well signed.
  • Boston (BOS) or JFK: US pre-clearance happens in Dublin (one of Aer Lingus’s biggest selling points to North America) — saving you an hour stateside. But the GUA connection still requires reaching the international terminal at BOS or JFK. Allow 90 minutes BOS, 2 hours JFK.
  • Forced 5+ hour Madrid layover? Leave the airport. Metro to central Madrid is 30 minutes, you can see Plaza Mayor or Retiro Park in 2-3 hours and be back comfortably.

Codeshare and Alliance Notes

  • Aer Lingus is part of IAG (the same parent group as British Airways and Iberia). It is not formally part of Oneworld but has Oneworld-like partnership benefits with BA, Iberia and American.
  • Avios mileage earns and can be redeemed on Aer Lingus, BA, Iberia and American — useful for short-haul redemptions later.
  • Aer Lingus + Delta is a separate transatlantic partnership not via IAG.

DUB-GUA is not a useful mileage-run option — too low yield for status credits. But the Avios you earn from a one-off DUB-MAD-GUA return are enough to cover a short Aer Lingus flight back to London or another EU city later.

Cheaper Alternative: Position Via London First

Some Irish flyers grab a EUR 20-40 Ryanair flight from DUB to LGW or STN, then take a separate LHR-MAD-GUA ticket on Iberia. This can be EUR 100-200 cheaper than a single DUB-MAD-GUA ticket.

Trade-offs:

  • Add 3-6 hours of travel time (Stansted/Gatwick to Heathrow takes 90 minutes).
  • Two separate tickets means no through-protection if Ryanair is late. You eat the cost of a missed Iberia flight.
  • Self-handle baggage between tickets — check in at LHR with bags reclaimed from STN/LGW.

Worth it only if you can build a 4-5 hour buffer in London and are travelling light enough to handle baggage easily. See our London to Guatemala flights guide for the second-leg detail.

Practical Notes On Arrival at Aurora (GUA)

  • Aurora International Airport is in Guatemala City, Zone 13, about 30 minutes from Antigua and 10 minutes from Cayala/Zone 14.
  • Immigration is straightforward for Irish passports — you get a 90-day tourist stamp on arrival.
  • Customs: bring personal effects without duty. Declare cash over USD 10,000.
  • Authorised taxis to Antigua: roughly Q200-300 (EUR 22-33). To Zone 10/14 city: Q60-100. Uber works from Aurora.

Cost-Saving Tactics That Work

  1. Set a price alert on Google Flights or Skyscanner 3-4 months out. Wait for a drop.
  2. Compare DUB direct vs London-positioning — if the saving is over EUR 100 and you have time, take it.
  3. Avoid peak Madrid layovers in June-August (Spain heat delays).
  4. Book Aer Lingus + Iberia direct rather than via a third-party reseller — better protection on schedule changes.
  5. Tuesday/Wednesday departures consistently save EUR 50-150.
  6. One-ways are usually more expensive than returns — buy a return and dispose of the back end if needed.

What About Charter or Private?

There are no scheduled charter flights from Ireland to Guatemala. Private aviation exists but is rarely cost-effective for individual travellers — figure USD 80,000-150,000 each way for mid-size jet charter.
