QUICK ANSWER
3 documents, 3 different purposes.
DPI: general ID within Guatemala and CA-4. Banking, contracts, voting.
Passport: international travel outside CA-4. Secondary ID in banking.
Driver's license: ONLY for driving. Doesn't work for banking or formal procedures.

Carry DPI daily, passport when traveling, license when driving.

Passport, DPI, and driver’s license are the three most common ID documents in Guatemala — but each one has a distinct purpose. Confusing them can leave you stranded at a procedure, bank, border, or traffic stop. This comparison explains what each is for, when they are interchangeable, and when they are NOT.

Quick takeaway: If you can only carry one, carry the DPI (works for 90% of domestic procedures). If you’ll travel outside Central America, add the passport. If you’ll drive, add the license. The three do not substitute each other.

Verified May 2026: Current costs: DPI Q100 first time (Q175 replacement), ordinary passport Q365 (executive Q545), Type C license Q150-250 by years. All require a valid DPI as basis.

What is the DPI

The DPI (Documento Personal de Identificacion) is the official ID card of Guatemalans, issued by RENAP (Decree 90-2005). It contains your name, photo, signature, fingerprint, and the CUI (13 digits).

Main uses:

  • Identifying yourself to authorities (police, MP, courts)
  • Opening and operating bank accounts
  • Voting in elections
  • Signing notarial contracts, deeds
  • Registering marriages, births, deaths
  • Applying for passport and driver’s license (both require DPI as basis)
  • SAT procedures (CUI works as NIT since 2025)
  • Traveling within CA-4 (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua)
  • IGSS healthcare and private medical care

Cost and time:

  • First time: Q100
  • Replacement: Q175
  • Time: 5-10 business days

See Guatemala DPI ID — full guide.

What is the Passport

The Guatemalan passport is the international travel document, issued by the Guatemalan Immigration Institute. It’s used to enter countries outside CA-4 (USA, Mexico, Europe, Asia, etc.).

Main uses:

  • Travel outside Central America (visa required by country)
  • ID at immigration (airport entry/exit)
  • Secondary ID in international banking
  • Consular procedures abroad
  • Backup if you lose your DPI outside Guatemala

Cost and time:

  • Ordinary passport: Q365
  • Executive passport: Q545
  • Time: 1-5 business days

What the passport does NOT do:

  • Doesn’t authorize driving (need license)
  • Doesn’t exempt you from DPI (both are required for Guatemalans)
  • Doesn’t give voting rights

See Guatemala passport.

What is the Driver’s License

The driver’s license is the official authorization to operate a vehicle in Guatemala, issued by the Transit Department. There are several types depending on the vehicle (car, motorcycle, heavy transport).

Common types (Decree 132-96):

What Happens if You’re Asked for the Wrong ID

They ask for DPI but you only have the license

  • Bank / notary / court: They tell you to come back. License does NOT replace DPI.
  • Hotel / restaurant: Generally accept license as informal secondary ID.
  • Traffic stop: If driving, license + circulation card is enough. If on foot, they ask for DPI.

They ask for passport but you only have DPI

  • International airport: They won’t let you board. DPI is not valid outside CA-4.
  • Mexican border immigration: They turn you back. You need passport.
  • International banking / large Western Union: May request passport as second ID.

They ask for license but you only have DPI

  • Traffic police: Fine for driving without license (Q200-500), possible vehicle impoundment.
  • Car rental: They won’t rent the vehicle. Valid license required.
  • Some car insurance: Claim may be denied if you drive without a license.

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: “I have a license, I don’t need a DPI”

FALSE. The license doesn’t replace the DPI. The license is obtained from the DPI. Without a valid DPI, your license won’t renew either.

Mistake 2: “I’ll carry the passport just in case, I don’t need DPI”

Inside Guatemala, the DPI is more practical (smaller, more durable, less risk of loss at the bank). And for voting / SAT / RENAP, DPI is mandatory.

Mistake 3: “My US license is an International License automatically”

FALSE. US license is not an International License automatically. If you’ll drive a lot outside your country, get an International Driving Permit at AAA before traveling.

Mistake 4: “Expired DPI is fine”

An expired DPI is not valid for official procedures. It’s accepted informally but not for banking, voting, CA-4 travel, or notarial procedures. Renew before it expires.

Mistake 5: “If I lose my passport abroad, I’ll use my DPI”

Only within CA-4. Outside CA-4 (including Mexico, USA, Europe), you must report the loss at a Guatemalan consulate and obtain an emergency passport.

For Diaspora from USA

If you live in the United States:

  1. Keep DPI valid — get it at a consulate without traveling
  2. Guatemalan passport — useful if you lose the US one or need travel to countries that don’t accept US
  3. US license — works 90 days during visits to GT, after that you must convert
  4. If planning permanent return, get everything before moving

Final Decision: Optimal Combination

If you live in Guatemala full-time:

  • Valid DPI (always)
  • Valid passport (even if you don’t travel often — good practice)
  • Driver’s license of the corresponding type if you drive

If you’re diaspora visiting:

  • Valid consular DPI
  • Valid Guatemalan passport (in addition to US)
  • US license for driving up to 90 days

If you’re a foreigner resident:

  • DPI de extranjero (permanent residency)
  • Passport from your country
  • Converted Guatemalan license (after 90 days)
