Avoid rural roads at night, avoid Zone 18 and Zone 21 of Guatemala City unless you specifically know where you’re going, and take Premium insurance because only ~10% of other drivers carry coverage. The State Department’s Level 3 advisory reflects general country-wide risk, not specifically driving risk.

Do I need an International Driving Permit? No. A valid US, Canadian, EU, UK, or Australian license is universally accepted by every rental agency and at every checkpoint.

What’s the worst rookie mistake? Trying to do Antigua → Lake Atitlán → Antigua in a single day. The 95-km drive each way takes 2.5 to 3 hours real time on switchbacks with no shoulder, and afternoon storms in rainy season make the return leg dangerous. Stay overnight at the lake.

Are tolls common? No. The main paid stretch is — new since June 2026 — the Xochi toll highway on the CA-2 Occidente toward the Costa Sur and Xela (~Q45 by car for the full 31 km), plus some CA-9 booths heading to Río Dulce. The old Autopista Palín–Escuintla toll ended in 2023, so the run to Monterrico and the Pacific is now toll-free. Most tourist routes have no toll at all. Carry small cash or a TAG.
