The route between Antigua Guatemala and Guatemala City is one of the most traveled in the country, covering just 45 kilometers along the Pan-American Highway (CA-1). Whether you are heading to a meeting in Zona 10, catching a flight from La Aurora Airport, or connecting to another bus, you have several options at every price point.
I have done this trip hundreds of times and can tell you that the biggest variable is not the transport — it is the traffic. The Pan-American Highway bottleneck near the Guatemala City entrance (San Lucas Sacatepequez through to the capital) can add 30-60 minutes during rush hour. Plan accordingly.
How to Take Each Option
Uber (Recommended)
Uber is the most convenient option for this route. Open the app in Antigua, set your destination, and a driver will pick you up within 5-10 minutes. The fare is typically Q200-280 during normal hours, rising to Q280-350 during surge pricing (rain, rush hour, or holidays).
Advantages: Door-to-door service, AC, GPS tracking, pay by card or cash. No need to find a terminal or wait for the bus to fill.
Disadvantages: More expensive than buses. Surge pricing during rush hour. Some drivers may cancel if they do not want to drive to the capital during heavy traffic.
Pro tip: If your Uber driver cancels, try requesting again. Drivers closer to the highway entrance in Antigua are more willing to take the trip. You can also try InDriver for a negotiated fare.
Pullman Bus (Rebuli)
Transportes Rebuli operates comfortable Pullman buses between Antigua and Guatemala City every 15 minutes from approximately 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The terminal is behind the Antigua market on Alameda Santa Lucia.
How to ride: Walk to the terminal, buy your ticket at the counter (Q20-30), and board the next departing bus. No reservations needed. Buses are clean with padded reclining seats and luggage storage underneath.
Drop-off in Guatemala City: Rebuli buses terminate at their terminal on 21 Calle in Zona 1. From there, grab an Uber to your final destination. Do not walk around Zona 1 at night with luggage.
Tourist Shuttle
Several companies run shuttle minivans between Antigua and Guatemala City, typically priced at Q80-120 per person. The advantage is door-to-door service — they pick you up at your hotel and drop you at your destination.
Best for: Travelers heading to the airport or a specific hotel. Book through your hotel or any tour agency on 5a Avenida in Antigua. Adrenalina Tours and GuateGo are reliable options.
Chicken Bus
The cheapest option at Q10-15, chicken buses run constantly from the Antigua market area to the CENMA terminal in Zona 12 of Guatemala City. They take the same Pan-American Highway route but stop more frequently to pick up passengers along the way.
Best for: Budget travelers comfortable with crowded, no-frills transport. Keep your bag on your lap and be prepared for an adventure. The trip takes 1-1.5 hours depending on stops.
Route Details
The drive follows the CA-1 (Pan-American Highway) through San Lucas Sacatepequez and then descends into the Guatemala City valley. The road is well-maintained, two to four lanes, and passes through several small towns.
Key stops along the way: San Lucas Sacatepequez (market, famous pepian), San Cristobal El Alto, Mixco.
Traffic hotspots: The San Lucas Sacatepequez bottleneck, the Mixco interchange, and the entrance to Guatemala City are the three worst points. Avoid traveling between 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM if possible.
Tips for This Route
- Start early: A 6 AM departure avoids most traffic and gets you to Guatemala City by 7 AM.
- Cash is king: Uber accepts cards, but have cash for buses and tuk-tuks. Small bills (Q10, Q20) are best.
- Rainy season (May-October): Afternoon rain can cause flooding and landslides near San Lucas. Travel in the morning.
- Return trips: The same options work in reverse. Uber from Guatemala City to Antigua is slightly cheaper (Q180-300) because you are going uphill away from traffic.
Connecting Routes
From Guatemala City, you can connect to buses heading to Flores/Tikal, Quetzaltenango, Coban, and Puerto Barrios. From Antigua, shuttles run to Lake Atitlan, Monterrico Beach, and Semuc Champey.
