How to Get a Mexico Visa from Guatemala

Guatemala is one of the countries that requires a visa to enter Mexico. The good news: the tourist visa is completely free for stays under 180 days, and the process is straightforward.

Even better: If you already have a valid US, Canadian, or Schengen visa, you don’t need a Mexican visa at all.

Are You Exempt?

Before starting the visa process, check if you qualify for an exemption. You do NOT need a Mexico visa if you hold:

  • Valid US visa (any category) or US permanent residency (Green Card)
  • Valid Canadian visa or Canadian permanent residency
  • Valid Schengen visa or EU residency
  • Valid Japanese visa or Japanese permanent residency
  • Valid UK visa or UK permanent residency
  • Valid Colombian visa or Colombian permanent residency
  • Valid Chilean visa or Chilean permanent residency
  • APEC Business Travel Card

If any of these apply, you can enter Mexico with just your Guatemalan passport and the valid foreign visa. No Mexican visa needed.

Step 1: Schedule Your Appointment

Appointments are released every Monday for that week’s available slots. Visit the Mexican Embassy appointments page early on Monday to get a slot.

Where to apply:

  • Embassy in Guatemala City: 2 Avenida 7-57, Zona 10
  • Consulate in Tecun Uman: For border region residents

Step 2: Complete the Visa Application Form

Download and fill out the visa application form from the embassy website. Print it and sign it.

Step 3: Gather Your Documents

Required:

  • Valid Guatemalan passport with at least 6 months validity
  • Photocopy of passport data page
  • Printed appointment confirmation
  • Completed and signed visa application form
  • One recent color photo — passport size, white background, face uncovered, neutral expression, no glasses, no retouching

Financial solvency (at least one of these):

  • Bank statements from the last 3 months showing sufficient funds
  • Employment letter stating salary and at least 1 year of employment
  • Property deeds
  • Patente de comercio (business registration)
  • RTU (tax registration) showing at least 1 year of activity

Step 4: Attend Your Interview

Bring all documents to the embassy at your scheduled time. The interview is short — the consular officer will verify your documents and ask about your travel plans.

Tips:

  • Arrive on time — late arrivals may be turned away
  • Bring originals AND copies of all financial documents
  • Be clear about your travel purpose, dates, and where you’ll stay
  • Dress neatly

Step 5: Pick Up Your Visa

If approved, your visa will be ready for pickup at the embassy within 3-10 business days. You’ll be told the exact date during your interview.
