The journey from Antigua to Lake Atitlan is one of Guatemala’s classic routes, taking you from the colonial city through the highlands to one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The most common destination is Panajachel, the main town on the lake’s north shore, where you can catch lanchas (boats) to all other lakeside towns.
I have done this trip by shuttle, chicken bus, and private car. The shuttle is the best option for most travelers — affordable, comfortable, and door-to-door. Here is everything you need to know.
How to Take Each Option
Shared Tourist Shuttle (Recommended)
Shared shuttles are 12-15 passenger minivans that pick you up at your hotel in Antigua and drop you off in Panajachel, typically near the main dock. The ride takes 2.5-3 hours through stunning highland scenery.
How to book: Walk into any tour agency on 5a Avenida in Antigua the day before. You can also book through Adrenalina Tours, Atitrans, GuateGo, or your hotel. Same-day bookings work outside holiday periods.
Schedule: Departures at 7:00-8:00 AM (most popular), 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, and 2:00-3:00 PM. The early morning departure is best for smooth roads and less traffic.
Price: Q100-190 ($13-25) per person depending on the company and season. Prices rise during Semana Santa and Christmas.
The route: The shuttle takes the Pan-American Highway (CA-1) west from Antigua through Chimaltenango, then turns south on RN-1 through Solola. The descent from Solola to Panajachel offers one of the most spectacular views in all of Central America — the lake framed by three volcanoes.
Chicken Bus (Budget Option)
If you are on a tight budget and enjoy adventure, chicken buses will get you there for a fraction of the shuttle price. The catch is that there is no direct service — you need to change buses 2-3 times.
Route: Antigua to Chimaltenango (Q5, 30 min) then Chimaltenango to Solola (Q15-20, 1.5 hrs) then Solola to Panajachel (Q5, 20 min). Total cost about Q25-40.
How: From the Antigua market terminal, take any bus heading to Chimaltenango. At the Chimaltenango junction on the Pan-American Highway, catch a westbound bus to Solola (ask the ayudante to let you off at the Solola turnoff). From the Solola market, minibuses descend to Panajachel every 15 minutes.
Time: Budget 3.5-4 hours including waits at each change.
Private Shuttle
For groups or those wanting comfort and flexibility, private shuttles cost Q1,200-1,700 for the vehicle (1-4 passengers), making it Q300-425 per person if you split the cost. Book through any Antigua tour agency or online.
What to Expect on Arrival in Panajachel
Shuttles drop you off near the main dock area in Panajachel. From here you can walk to hotels in town, or head to the dock to catch a lancha to San Pedro, San Marcos, Santiago Atitlan, or other towns. See our complete Lake Atitlan lancha guide for boat schedules and prices.
Tips for This Route
- Book early morning shuttles for the best views and smooth travel. Afternoon winds make the lake crossing choppy if you need a lancha.
- Bring a jacket. The highlands above 2,000 meters can be chilly, especially in the early morning. The shuttle has AC.
- Sit on the right side for the best views during the descent from Solola to Panajachel.
- Holidays mean higher prices. Shuttles can sell out during Semana Santa. Book 2-3 days ahead.
- Returning to Antigua: The same shuttle companies run the reverse route. Book your return at the Panajachel office or through your lakeside hotel.
- Going beyond Panajachel: If your final destination is San Pedro, San Marcos, or another lake town, factor in an extra Q25-35 and 20-40 minutes for the lancha from Panajachel.
Connecting Routes
From Panajachel you can reach all lakeside towns by lancha. From Lake Atitlan shuttles continue to Quetzaltenango (Xela) in about 3 hours.
