Step-by-Step: Arriving at La Aurora

After Immigration and Customs

  1. Collect your luggage from the carousel in the arrivals area.
  2. Exchange money at the exchange counters inside arrivals. Rates are reasonable for small amounts (Q500-2,000). For larger amounts, use ATMs outside.
  3. Buy a SIM card (optional but recommended) at the Tigo or Claro kiosks in arrivals. Costs Q100-150 for a prepaid SIM with data. Essential for Uber.
  4. Choose your transport: Walk past the taxi desk inside arrivals and exit the terminal.

Walk outside the arrivals exit and head to the rideshare pickup area on the lower level. Open the Uber app, enter your hotel address, and request a ride. A driver will arrive within 5-15 minutes.

Why Uber is best: Cheapest option, GPS tracking, pay by card or cash, and the airport is in a safe, high-traffic area with plenty of available drivers.

Official Airport Taxi

If you do not have the Uber app or data, the official taxi desk is inside the arrivals hall before the exit doors. Tell them your destination, pay the fixed rate, and they will assign you a licensed driver.

Advantage: No app or phone needed. Reliable at any hour, including midnight arrivals. Disadvantage: 2-3x more expensive than Uber for the same trip.

Shuttle to Antigua

For the specific airport-to-Antigua route, see our detailed guide: Guatemala City Airport to Antigua.

Late Night Arrivals (After 10 PM)

Uber driver availability drops after midnight but does not disappear. You may wait 10-15 minutes for a driver instead of the usual 3-5 minutes. The official taxi desk operates 24/7 and is the most reliable late-night option.

Pre-booked transfers: If arriving very late, consider pre-booking a private transfer through your hotel or GetYourGuide. The driver will wait with a sign in arrivals.

Tips

  • Do not accept rides from unofficial drivers. People may approach you inside the terminal offering rides. Decline politely and use official taxis or Uber.
  • ATMs are outside the terminal. BAC, Banrural, and BI ATMs are just outside the arrivals exit.
  • WiFi is available inside the terminal. Connect to request an Uber if you do not have a local SIM yet.
  • The airport is safe. Zona 13 is one of the better zones in Guatemala City. The area around the airport is well-patrolled.
  • Returning to the airport: From Guatemala City, Uber to the airport is Q25-50 from most zones. From Antigua, allow 2-2.5 hours before your flight.
