Uber has been operating in Guatemala since 2017 and is by far the safest, most convenient transport option in Guatemala City and increasingly in Antigua. If you are visiting or living in Guatemala, downloading Uber is one of the first things you should do.
Where Uber Works
| City | Coverage | Driver Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Guatemala City | Excellent | 24/7, usually under 5 min |
| Antigua Guatemala | Good | Available most hours, 5-15 min wait |
| Panajachel | Limited | Some drivers, longer waits |
| Quetzaltenango | Limited | Some drivers, not always available |
Uber does not work in smaller cities, rural areas, or the Peten region. For those areas, use tuk-tuks, local taxis, or buses.
Guatemala City Uber Prices
| Route | Fare (GTQ) | Fare (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Zona 10 to Zona 1 | Q30-50 | $3.90-6.50 |
| Zona 10 to La Aurora Airport | Q25-40 | $3.25-5.20 |
| Zona 10 to Zona 4 (Cuatro Grados) | Q20-35 | $2.60-4.55 |
| Zona 14 to Zona 10 | Q20-30 | $2.60-3.90 |
| Guatemala City to Antigua | Q200-350 | $25.90-45.35 |
| Guatemala City to Panajachel | Q500-800 | $64.77-103.63 |
Surge pricing: Expect 1.5-3x normal fares during rain (daily May-October), rush hour (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM), and holidays. A Q30 trip can become Q75 during heavy rain.
How to Use Uber in Guatemala
- Download the Uber app and set up your account before arriving in Guatemala.
- Add a payment method. Credit/debit cards work. Cash payments are also available — many Guatemalan drivers prefer cash.
- Request your ride. Enter your destination, confirm the fare estimate, and request. Spanish is not needed — the app handles communication.
- Verify the driver. Before entering, check the driver’s name, photo, and license plate match what the app shows. This is critical for safety.
- Rate your driver after the trip. This keeps the system trustworthy.
Safety Tips
- Always verify the car. Check the license plate and the driver’s face against the app. Never get in a car that does not match.
- Share your trip with a trusted contact using the app’s share feature.
- Sit in the back seat. This is standard practice in Guatemala.
- Night rides: Uber is safe for night rides in Guatemala City. Much safer than flagging a street taxi.
- Airport pickups: Walk outside the arrivals terminal to the designated rideshare area to meet your driver.
InDriver: The Alternative
InDriver (now “inDrive”) is a ride-hailing app where passengers propose a fare and drivers accept or counter-offer. It has grown in Guatemala since 2018.
Advantages: Potentially cheaper than Uber during surge periods, since there is no algorithm-driven pricing. Available in Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango.
Disadvantages: Smaller driver pool, less reliable availability, and a worse safety reputation in Guatemala. Reports of robberies and safety incidents are more common with InDriver than Uber.
Recommendation: Stick with Uber for safety and reliability. Use InDriver only as a backup when Uber is unavailable or surging heavily, and only in well-trafficked areas during daylight hours.
Taxis vs Uber
| Factor | Uber | Street Taxi |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | GPS tracked, driver verified | No tracking, unknown driver |
| Price | Transparent, app-based | Negotiated or metered (meters rare) |
| Availability | App-based, 24/7 in GC | Flag on street |
| Payment | Card or cash | Cash only |
| Recommendation | Always preferred | Avoid unless no alternative |
Bottom line: Never take an unmarked street taxi in Guatemala City. Use Uber, InDriver, or official hotel/airport taxi services.
