The lancha ride from Panajachel to San Pedro La Laguna is one of the most scenic short trips in Guatemala. Motorboats zip across Lake Atitlan, framed by the volcanoes San Pedro, Toliman, and Atitlan, delivering you to the backpacker hub of San Pedro in just 20-30 minutes.
How Lanchas Work
Lanchas (small motorboats) operate as a water taxi system on Lake Atitlan. There are no formal tickets — you pay cash to the boat operator either before boarding or upon arrival.
Getting to the Dock
Walk to the main dock in Panajachel, known as the Tzanjuyu dock, located at the end of Calle del Embarcadero. Follow signs for “Embarcadero” or “Lanchas” from Calle Santander (the main tourist street). The dock has a covered waiting area.
Two Types of Lanchas
Slow boats (Orange Route): These lanchas stop at multiple towns along the western shore: San Pedro, San Juan La Laguna, San Pablo La Laguna, San Marcos La Laguna, Tzununa, Jaibalito, and Santa Cruz La Laguna. The trip to San Pedro takes 25-30 minutes with 3-4 stops.
Express boats (Green Route): Direct lanchas to San Pedro depart early in the morning (6:00-8:00 AM) and take only 15-20 minutes with no stops. Ask specifically for “directo a San Pedro” when boarding.
Schedule
Lanchas run from approximately 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM (sometimes 6:00 PM). Boats depart when they have enough passengers, typically every 20-30 minutes. During busy periods (weekends, holidays), boats fill faster and leave more frequently.
The last boat back to Panajachel from San Pedro is around 5:00 PM. Do not miss it unless you plan to stay overnight in San Pedro.

Tips for the Boat Ride
- Morning is best. Before 10 AM, the lake is calm and the views are crystal clear. After 1 PM, the Xocomil wind kicks up and the water gets choppy.
- Sit in the back. The bow catches every wave on choppy days. The back is drier and slightly less bumpy.
- Ask for a life jacket. They should be available on every boat. If the operator does not offer one, ask.
- Waterproof your stuff. On choppy days, spray comes over the sides. Keep electronics in a dry bag or plastic bag.
- Sunscreen and hat. There is no shade on the boat and the equatorial sun is strong, even on cloudy days.
