The Guatemala City to Flores route is the longest and most important domestic transport route in Guatemala. Flores is the gateway to Tikal, the most significant Maya archaeological site in the country. You have two fundamentally different choices: fly in 1 hour or ride a bus for 9 hours.
Having done this trip both ways multiple times, my strong recommendation is to fly if your budget allows it. The bus ride is long, the road passes through remote areas, and the time savings are enormous. That said, the overnight bus with Linea Dorada is a perfectly viable option that saves you a hotel night.
The Flight Option: TAG Airlines
TAG Airlines operates 2-3 daily flights from La Aurora International Airport (GUA) to Mundo Maya International Airport (FRS) near Flores. Small turboprop aircraft (ATR 42/72) make the journey in about 60 minutes.
Price: Q1,200-1,800 ($155-233) one way. Book directly at tag.com.gt for the best fares. Prices are higher during peak season (December-April) and around Semana Santa.
Luggage: 20 kg checked luggage limit. Pack light or pay for excess baggage.
Why fly: You save 8 hours each way, which means an extra full day at Tikal. For a typical 3-day Peten trip, flying saves you two travel days. The math strongly favors flying unless you are on a very tight budget.
Cancellations: Small planes can be grounded due to weather, especially during rainy season (June-October). Always have a bus backup plan.
Overnight Bus: Linea Dorada (Recommended Bus Option)
Linea Dorada is Guatemala’s premier bus service to Flores. Their overnight service is the most popular choice for travelers who want to save on both a hotel night and a flight.
Terminal: 10a Avenida, Zona 1, Guatemala City. Take an Uber to the terminal — do not walk around Zona 1 at night.
Schedule: Departures at 6:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 8:00 PM, and 10:00 PM. The 10 PM departure arrives in Flores around 6-7 AM, perfect for catching a morning shuttle to Tikal.
Fare: Q500-700 ($65-91) one way, Q750-1,050 round trip. The premium price buys you wide reclining seats with footrests, air conditioning, a meal, personal entertainment screens, two drivers, and onboard bathroom.
Tips: Bring a blanket and neck pillow — the AC runs cold. Earplugs and an eye mask help for sleeping. Keep valuables in your lap bag, not in overhead storage.
Budget Option: Fuente del Norte
Fuente del Norte is the workhorse bus company for this route, offering the most departures at the lowest prices.
Terminal: 17 Calle 8-46, Zona 1, Guatemala City.
Schedule: Departures roughly every 1-2 hours from 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM daily.
Classes and prices:
- Class A: Q263 per person
- Class B: Q315-420 depending on departure time
Service: Standard coach buses with reclining seats, AC, and onboard bathroom. Less luxurious than Linea Dorada but perfectly serviceable for the journey.
Online booking: Available at transportesfuentedelnorte.com.
Cristobal Colon
Another solid option for Flores, Cristobal Colon operates from the same zone as Galgos.
Terminal: 7ma Avenida 19-44, Zona 1, Guatemala City.
Schedule: Monday-Friday at 8:15 PM, 9:00 PM, 9:30 PM. Weekends at 8:15 PM and 9:00 PM.
Classes:
- First Category: Q269 per person
- Diamond Category: Q346 per person
Booking: Online or at the terminal. Purchase tickets at least 15 minutes before departure.
From Flores to Tikal
Once you arrive in Flores/Santa Elena, you still need to get to Tikal (about 65 km north). Shuttle minivans run from Santa Elena and Flores island to Tikal throughout the day. The earliest shuttles depart at 4:30-5:00 AM for sunrise at Tikal. Price is Q90-200 per person round trip.
See our Tikal guide for complete visitor information.
Tips for This Route
- Book Linea Dorada in advance during holidays. Seats sell out during Semana Santa and Christmas week.
- The road is mostly flat through Peten, but the stretch through the Polochic Valley can be winding. Take motion sickness medication if needed.
- Night buses are safe. Major companies like Linea Dorada and Fuente del Norte travel with two drivers and make minimal stops.
- Return buses from Flores follow the same schedules in reverse. Book at the Flores/Santa Elena terminal.
- Combine with Belize: From Flores, Linea Dorada continues to Melchor de Mencos at the Belize border (additional 2-3 hours, Q550-750 total from GC).
Prices verified March 2026. Exchange rate: Q7.72 per USD.
