Esquipulas is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Central America, home to the Basilica del Cristo Negro (Black Christ). Millions of Guatemalans make the journey annually, especially around January 15 when the town hosts the largest religious festival in the country.

Tips
- January is chaos. During the Esquipulas pilgrimage (especially around January 15), buses are packed and the town is overwhelmed. Book in advance and expect crowds.
- The basilica is spectacular. Even if you are not religious, the Basilica del Cristo Negro is an impressive colonial church worth visiting.
- Hot climate: Esquipulas is in a valley at 900 meters. Expect warm temperatures (25-32C). Bring water and sunscreen.
- Border connection: Esquipulas is close to the Honduras border at Agua Caliente. Buses continue from Esquipulas to the border for connecting to Copan Ruinas.
- Return buses depart from the Esquipulas terminal from 1:30 AM to 5:15 PM.
