Guatemalan Radio: A Guide for the Diaspora

If you grew up in Guatemala, you know the sound. Emisoras Unidas breaking news at 6 AM. Radio Sonora calling the Liga Nacional play-by-play. La Tronadora blasting out of every comedor at lunch. Marimba drifting from a radio in the market.

For the estimated 1.5 million Guatemalans living in the United States and millions more across Mexico, Canada, and Europe, Guatemalan radio is one of the strongest connections to home. The good news is that most major Guatemalan stations now stream online for free. You can listen from Los Angeles, Houston, New York, or anywhere with an internet connection.

This directory covers every major Guatemalan radio station, TV channel, and podcast with live streaming access. We keep the links updated so you can always find a working stream.

How Guatemalan Radio Works

Guatemala has a vibrant radio landscape with over 1,000 registered stations. The FM dial in Guatemala City alone is packed from 88.1 to 107.7 MHz. Most stations fall into a few categories:

The biggest stations — Emisoras Unidas, Radio Sonora, and the Emisoras Unidas network (which includes Atmosfera 96.5) — broadcast across multiple frequencies nationwide and have dedicated streaming on their websites.

The AM Band Is Not Dead

While FM dominates, Guatemala still has active AM stations. Radio Cultural TGN broadcasts on 730 AM alongside its 100.5 FM frequency. Radio Maria uses 1600 AM. Nuevo Mundo on 1020 AM remains a trusted name in news. AM reaches rural areas where FM signals are weak, making it vital for indigenous communities in the highlands.

Guatemalan TV Streaming

Guatemala’s TV landscape has consolidated around a few major groups:

Grupo Chapin TV owns Canal 3, Canal 7 (Televisiete), and TN23. Noti 7 on Canal 7 is the country’s most-watched evening newscast. TN23 is their 24-hour news channel, similar to CNN. All three stream through chapintv.com.

Canal Antigua stands out for quality journalism and cultural programming. Their documentaries on Guatemalan heritage are excellent. Stream live at canalantigua.tv/envivo.

Guatevision is the home of Viva La Manana, Guatemala’s most popular morning show. Available on Fubo TV and DirecTV for cable subscribers in the US. Free streaming at guatevision.com/en-vivo.

Liga Nacional on the Radio

Football is religion in Guatemala, and radio is how most fans follow the Liga Nacional. The main stations for live match broadcasts are:

  1. La Red (106.1 FM) — The dedicated sports station. Broadcasts Comunicaciones, Municipal, Antigua GFC, Coban Imperial, Guastatoya, Deportivo Malacateco, and Xelaju MC matches regularly.
  2. Emisoras Unidas (89.7 FM) — Select Liga Nacional matches plus the Guatemalan national team (La Azul y Blanco).
  3. Radio Sonora (96.9 FM) — Sports coverage alongside news programming. One of the oldest sports broadcasters.
  4. Radio Punto (90.5 FM) — Live soccer and breaking sports news.
  5. Stereo 100 (100.3 FM, Quetzaltenango) — Western Guatemala’s sports voice. Essential for Xelaju MC coverage.

For TV coverage, Tigo Sports and Claro Sports carry most Liga Nacional matches on cable subscriptions. Some teams also stream matches on their official YouTube and Facebook pages.

The Rise of Guatemalan Podcasts

Guatemala’s podcast scene has exploded in recent years. The most popular shows include:

Tips for Streaming from the US

The simplest way to listen is through TuneIn, which has the largest collection of Guatemalan stations and works on phones, tablets, computers, and smart speakers. Say “Play Emisoras Unidas on TuneIn” to your Alexa or Google Home.

For a dedicated experience, download one of the Guatemala radio apps from the Google Play Store or App Store. Most offer 500+ stations with background playback and Chromecast support.

If a stream is geo-blocked (rare, but it happens), a VPN set to Guatemala will solve it. ProtonVPN offers a free tier that works well enough for audio streaming.
