San Marcos La Laguna is the yoga and wellness capital of Lake Atitlan — a tiny, peaceful village of 3,500 on the lake’s northern shore that has become a global magnet for meditation retreats, plant medicine ceremonies, sound healing, and spiritual seekers of every kind.
The village sits at 1,580m between two rocky points, connected by jungle paths that wind past yoga shalas, vegetarian restaurants, and artisan shops. There are no tuk-tuks, no loud bars, no ATMs. The loudest sound most nights is the howler monkeys. This is the quiet, contemplative counterpart to San Pedro’s party scene across the lake.
Why People Come Here
- Yoga and meditation: Daily classes at multiple centers. Las Piramides offers a famous month-long silence and meditation course. Drop-in classes Q50-100 ($6.50-13).
- Cerro Tzankujil: Sacred nature reserve with cliff jumping into the lake, swimming platforms, and a Mayan ceremonial site. Q25 entry.
- Peace and quiet: No cars on the main paths, no nightlife noise, no tourist touts. Just the lake, the volcanoes, and birdsong.
- Community: A tight-knit mix of long-term expats, spiritual practitioners, and local Kaqchikel Maya families. Everyone knows everyone.
- Plant medicine: San Marcos is a hub for cacao ceremonies, temazcal (sweat lodge), and other traditional healing practices.
- Swimming: Some of the best lake access on Atitlan. Clear water, rocky coves, and the Cerro Tzankujil platforms.

Practical Tips
- No ATM. Bring cash from Panajachel or San Pedro. Some places accept card payments, but most are cash only.
- Headlamp essential. The paths between restaurants and accommodations are unlit at night and uneven.
- Vegetarian-dominant. Most restaurants are vegetarian or vegan. Meat options exist but are limited.
- Quiet hours are respected. This is not a party town. If you want nightlife, go to San Pedro.
- Internet is adequate at cafes (Circles Cafe has decent wifi) but not reliable enough for video calls from most accommodations.
