Papaya grows abundantly in Guatemala is tropical lowlands and is a common breakfast fruit. It is eaten fresh, blended into smoothies (licuados), or served in fruit salads. The large Maradol variety is most common in markets. Papaya is also used to tenderize meat in traditional cooking. Prices are relatively stable year-round due to continuous tropical production.
