Bananas (called guineos in Guatemala) are one of the most affordable and widely available fruits. Guatemala is a major banana-producing country, with large plantations on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Bananas are eaten fresh, fried as platanos fritos, or cooked into rellenitos (a dessert stuffed with sweetened beans). They are sold by the dozen or bunch (mano) at markets.
