Avocados are beloved in Guatemala and grow abundantly in the highland regions. The local variety (aguacate criollo) has smooth, thin green skin and a rich, creamy flavor different from the Hass variety common in the US. Avocados are served sliced alongside meals, mashed into guacamole, or eaten plain with salt and lime. Prices drop significantly during peak season (August-November).
