Hospitals and Emergency Care in Antigua Guatemala
Antigua has two main hospital options: Hospital Privado Hermano Pedro for private care and Hospital Nacional Pedro de Bethancourt for free public services. For serious emergencies, patients may be transferred to Guatemala City hospitals (45 minutes by ambulance).
For Tourists and Expats
Hospital Hermano Pedro is the recommended option for visitors, with a 24-hour emergency room and doctors who speak some English. The US Embassy lists it as a recommended facility. Vitalmed offers general consultations with English-speaking doctors and is popular with the expat community.
Public Hospital Option
Hospital Pedro de Bethancourt in the nearby village of San Felipe provides free emergency care. It is the main public hospital for the entire Sacatepequez department. Wait times can be long, but the emergency department operates 24/7.
