Banks and ATMs in Chichicastenango

Chichicastenango has limited banking with just BAM and Banrural having branches and ATMs. For the famous Thursday and Sunday markets, you need cash – virtually no market vendors accept cards.

Market Day ATM Warning

On market days (Thursday and Sunday), ATMs can run out of cash due to high demand from both locals and tourists. Withdraw cash the day before your planned market visit. Bring small bills (Q20, Q50) because vendors often cannot make change for Q100 or Q200 notes.

BAM has the most reliable ATM for international cards. Banrural ATMs use the 5B network and accept Visa and MasterCard. Both are in Zona 1 near the market area.

How Much Cash for the Market

Budget at least Q500-Q1,000 for market shopping. Textiles and handicrafts range from Q50 for small items to Q500+ for elaborate huipiles. Bargaining is expected – start at about 60% of the asking price.
