Understanding Guatemalan Consular Services in the US

With over 1.5 million Guatemalans living in the United States, Guatemala maintains one of the largest consular networks of any Central American country. These 22 locations serve the diaspora for essential document services, legal assistance, and civic participation.

What You Can Do at a Consulate

Every Guatemalan consulate offers core services: passport renewal and issuance, DPI (national ID) processing, birth certificate requests, document legalization, notarial services, and consular ID cards. Some larger consulates (Los Angeles, New York, Houston) also offer additional services like voter registration and legal consultations.

Appointment vs Walk-In

While all consulates accept walk-ins, appointments are strongly recommended. Walk-in wait times can exceed 4 hours at busy locations like Los Angeles and Houston. Book through the MINEX appointment portal or call your consulate directly.

Mobile Consulates (Consulados Moviles)

Guatemala operates mobile consulates that travel to smaller cities without permanent consular offices. These are announced on the MINEX website and social media. If you live far from a consulate, check the mobile consulate schedule – they typically visit each city 1-2 times per month and offer the same core services.

Payment Methods

Most consulates accept money orders and cashier’s checks only. No cash, no personal checks, no credit cards. Some newer locations have started accepting card payments, but do not count on it. Get your money order from a post office, Walmart, or Western Union before your appointment.
