Panajachel is the banking hub for the entire Lake Atitlan region. Most lake towns have limited or no ATMs, so always withdraw enough cash in Panajachel before heading to other communities.

Banco Industrial on Calle del Estadio and inside Dispensa Familiar supermarket are the most reliable for international cards. The BAM ATM on Avenida Santander is notable because it dispenses both US dollars and quetzales – one of the few in the lake area.

Critical Warning: Cash is King at the Lake

Most businesses around Lake Atitlan are cash-only. Credit cards are only accepted at upscale hotels and a few restaurants in Panajachel and San Pedro. Withdraw enough cash for your entire lake visit before leaving Panajachel.

  • Withdrawal limit: Q2,000 ($260 USD) per transaction
  • Always keep small bills (Q20, Q50) – many vendors cannot break Q100 or Q200 notes
  • Have a backup card in case one ATM network is down
  • The safest ATMs are inside Dispensa Familiar and inside bank branches
