How much does an accountant cost in Guatemala? A monthly retainer (ongoing bookkeeping) is the most common arrangement: Q500-2,500/month for pequeño contribuyente, Q1,500-5,000/month for businesses on the general regime, and Q3,000-15,000/month for mid-sized or large companies. One-off services like incorporating a company, annual returns, or audits are billed separately.
This guide covers the real ranges by service type and business size, based on surveys of practicing accountants and the recommendations of the Colegio de Contadores Públicos y Auditores de Guatemala.
Quick summary: Pequeño contribuyente retainer Q500-1,500/month. Small S.A. retainer Q2,000-4,000/month. Annual ISR return Q1,000-5,000. Company formation Q2,000-6,000. External audit Q15,000-100,000+.

City Differences
Accountants in Guatemala City charge 20-40% more than those in the interior. The commercial zones (9, 10, 14) are the most expensive.
You can hire an accountant in the interior for a business based in the capital if the work is fully digital (common as of April 2026). Typical savings: 20-30%.
Perito Contador vs. Contador Público y Auditor (CPA)
There are two levels of accounting professionals in Guatemala:
- Perito Contador — a high-school-level accounting credential (3 years), enough to handle bookkeeping for small and mid-sized businesses and basic tax advisory. Cheaper.
- Contador Público y Auditor (CPA) — university degree (5 years) plus colegiación in the Colegio de Contadores Públicos y Auditores. Can sign audited financial statements, conduct formal audits, represent companies before SAT in complex cases. More expensive.
For a small individual business, a perito contador is enough and more affordable (Q500-1,500/month). For a formal S.A., a company with foreign investment, or any business that needs audited statements, you need a CPA.
How to Hire an Accountant
- Define the scope clearly — monthly returns only? Full bookkeeping? Payroll? Audit?
- Get quotes from 2-3 accountants — the spread can be 50-100% for the same work
- Verify CPA colegiación if you’re hiring them as a formal auditor
- Ask for references — current clients are the best signal
- Sign a written contract with scope, monthly retainer, exclusions, and communication policy
- Give controlled access — invoices, bank statements, returns. Don’t hand over every banking password
- Review the work monthly — at minimum verify that returns were filed on time
Red Flags
- Late returns — they cause penalties that you pay
- No monthly or quarterly financial statements — without visibility you can’t manage
- Slow to reply for days at a time — bad sign for a professional with access to your financial data
- “Don’t worry about it” when you ask about compliance — a good accountant educates you, doesn’t shut you down
- No invoice of their own — as a tax professional, they should be a model of compliance themselves
